Position Summary

The Dog Care Coordinator plays a central role in keeping the shelters canine care and medical workflow organized and moving forward. This position is responsible for scheduling surgeries and aftercare appointments, coordinating with our in-house veterinary staff as well as external veterinary partners. The Coordinator also supports pathway planning for dogs, ensuring each animal receives timely care and is set up for successful adoption outcomes.

This role requires a highly organized individual with excellent communication skills who can manage a fast-paced workload, interact with multiple departments, and provide steady support for fosters and adopters. While the focus is on scheduling and coordination, the Dog Care Coordinator also assists with animal handling, administering vaccines, transport, and supporting shelter events.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage scheduling of surgeries, medical appointments, and aftercare with in-house staff and external veterinary partners
  • Track animal inventory and run reports to monitor upcoming medical needs, vaccine requirements, and care deadlines
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records in PetPoint and other shelter management systems
  • Communicate daily with animal care, foster, rescue, and adoption teams to coordinate animal movement and transfers
  • Provide input on pathway planning for shelter dogs, working closely with the Animal Care Supervisor and Kennel Lead
  • Administer vaccines, assist with restraint for exams, and handle dogs safely as needed
  • Transport animals to veterinary clinics, partner organizations, and events; drive large vehicles with animals when required
  • Participate in the rotation for foster program support, answering after-hours foster calls on a scheduled basis
  • Support shelter adoption and outreach events as assigned
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Animal Care Supervisor or Shelter Manager

Day in the Life

A typical day as Dog Care Coordinator begins with checking animal inventory and running reports to identify dogs needing surgery, aftercare, or updated vaccines. Throughout the day youll manage appointments, update records in PetPoint, and coordinate with veterinary partners. Youll walk through the kennels to lay eyes on dogs, note medical or behavioral concerns, and connect with the foster and rescue teams to arrange transfers. Youll also collaborate with the Animal Care Supervisor and Kennel Lead on pathway planning, ensuring dogs move smoothly from intake to outcome. While most of your work is scheduling and coordination, youll also administer vaccines, transport animals, and occasionally step in to support events or direct care needs.
