Job Description

As the Sound Fellow, you will work collaboratively in a professional theater setting alongside some of the top sound professionals in the field. The fellowship provides a dynamic environment for the Fellow to hone their skills before beginning their professional career or continuing their higher education.

Arena Stage will provide the Sound Fellow many opportunities for learning in a working environment and in structured training sessions including:

  • Assisting a variety of Sound Designers and Composers
  • Working with the department in implementing full sound systems: rigging speakers, interconnecting a variety of protocols (analog, Dante, aes, etc), coordinating a large number of wireless transmitters, building equipment racks, etc.
  • Opportunity to mix special projects and events.
  • Assist with implementing and maintaining show operations: video cctv, audio/video/data networks, radios, etc.

The ideal candidate for the Sound & Video Department will be someone who is self-motivated to grow their skills and knowledge, and a willingness to say, "I don't know, could you show me?". The fellow should have strong foundation in basic sound equipment, some mixing experience, some A2 and wireless mic experience, and knowing what the gaps are in their knowledge.

Additional expectations: The Sound Fellow will be required to work a variable schedule depending on the production needs but no more than 40 hours a week average over the fellowship. This means that during technical rehearsals, weekly hours will be well over 40, but those extra hours are offset by time off on other weeks. Your work assisting the sound team may occasionally require climbing ladders, working at heights and lifting up to 50 pounds.

You might be interested in this fellowship if you want to pursue a career in production sound, A1/A2, or a full-time position at a theatre/event space
