Job Title: Assistant Superintendent / Superintendent – Commercial Interiors

Job Description

This role oversees multiple commercial interior construction projects in Washington, DC and nearby Maryland, typically ranging from $1 million to $20 million. The focus is on higher education, university, and housing authority projects, with a strong emphasis on quality, schedule, and collaboration in the field. The position offers significant long-term growth potential, with the opportunity to develop from an assistant superintendent into a lead superintendent under the guidance of experienced mentors.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day field operations for multiple commercial interior construction projects in Washington, DC and adjacent Maryland, ranging from $1 million to $20 million in value.
  • Oversee interior construction for higher education, university, and housing authority projects, ensuring work meets design specifications, quality standards, and project goals.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and supervise all trades and subcontractors on site to maintain productivity, safety, and adherence to project timelines.
  • Lead and run regular field meetings, including developing and maintaining a three-week look-ahead schedule to keep all stakeholders informed and aligned.
  • Handle RFIs and submittals in coordination with the project team, ensuring timely responses and accurate documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, design teams, and internal stakeholders, representing the project and company professionally on site.
  • Monitor jobsite safety and enforce safety protocols and procedures for all personnel and subcontractors.
  • Collaborate closely with project managers, assistant project managers, and office-based staff to resolve field issues and keep projects on schedule and within scope.
  • Support and mentor field staff where appropriate, contributing to a collaborative and growth-oriented project culture.
  • Report progress and field conditions to the DC office regularly, providing clear updates on schedule, issues, and milestones.

Essential Skills

  • At least 5 years of superintendent experience working on commercial interiors projects in the Washington, DC market.
  • Proven experience managing commercial interior construction projects, ideally in higher education, university, or similar institutional environments.
  • Hands-on experience with RFIs and submittals, including tracking, coordination, and communication with the project team.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and coordinate multiple trades and subcontractors on active jobsites.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to speak confidently with clients and lead field meetings.
  • Ability to create, manage, and present three-week look-ahead schedules for the field team.
  • Solid understanding of construction means and methods, particularly for interior build-outs and renovations.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail in a fast-paced field environment.

  • Experience specifically with college and university commercial construction projects.
  • experience working for commercial interiors general contractors in the DC region.
  • Desire to grow into a lead superintendent role with increasing responsibility over time.
  • Interest in long-term career development within a stable, family-run construction firm.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with mentors and leaders and to learn new processes and best practices.
  • Comfort working within structured training and development programs that support career progression.

Work Environment

This is a 100% on-site field role based in Washington, DC with projects in DC and nearby Maryland. You will work for a long-established, family-run commercial interiors general contractor that has operated in the region for about 40 years. The culture emphasizes internal growth, mentorship, and structured training, with clear pathways for advancing from assistant superintendent to superintendent and beyond. The work environment is fast-paced and collaborative, centered on active construction sites for higher education, university, and housing authority projects. You will interact daily with subcontractors, clients, and internal project teams, supported by a DC-based office that provides structure and resources for successful project delivery and long-term career development.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Washington, DC.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $33.65 - $49.00/hr.
