Job Description

Job DescriptionJob Title: Roadway Inspector
Job Description

The Roadway Inspector observes and inspects civil engineering construction work on a large, complex highway and bridge interchange project to verify conformance with project plans, specifications, and applicable standards. This role focuses on reconstruction and complete reconfiguration of major interstate flyover bridges, bridge replacements and widenings, roadway expansions, and associated retaining structures, walls, and embankments. The inspector works independently on standard civil construction assignments and supports senior inspectors on more complex work, with a strong emphasis on accurate documentation, clear communication, safety compliance, and problem resolution in the field.

Responsibilities

  • Perform field construction inspection and documentation services on heavy highway, roadway, and bridge construction projects, including reconstruction and reconfiguration of major interstate interchanges.
  • Inspect construction activities related to bridge replacement, bridge widening, flyover bridges, roadway expansions, lane additions, and associated structures such as MSE walls, cast-in-place concrete walls, pile and lagging walls, and retained earth structures.
  • Oversee and document mass earth fills and embankments, rock cuts, rock blasting, PCC concrete paving, and asphalt resurfacing to verify conformance with project specifications and standards.
  • Conduct roadway inspection activities, including oversight of grading, drainage, and pavement construction, and confirm that work aligns with approved plans and specifications.
  • Perform bridge inspection tasks, including monitoring reinforced concrete bridge construction, formwork, rebar placement, concrete pours, and related structural components.
  • Inspect site civil work such as utilities, erosion control measures, grading, and related construction activities, ensuring compliance with contract documents and regulatory requirements.
  • Review job site safety conditions daily, document observations, and take immediate action to address and help resolve safety issues in accordance with OSHA standards and company policies.
  • Understand and adhere to OSHA Safety Standards and internal safety policies at all times while working on active construction sites.
  • Ensure that all work performed by contractors complies with applicable industry standards, contract specifications, and client requirements.
  • Prepare detailed, accurate, and timely daily reports documenting construction progress, inspection activities, and testing results.
  • Record and submit daily forms, logs, and other required documentation in accordance with project procedures and deadlines.
  • Maintain and organize necessary records, including measurements of field quantities, test results, and inspection notes, to verify contractor compliance with contract documents.
  • Conduct field tests and coordinate other required testing to determine whether materials and workmanship meet specified requirements.
  • Review all inspection reports and documentation for completeness and accuracy before submission.
  • Submit accurate weekly timesheets, mileage logs, and expense reports within required timelines.
  • Communicate effectively with contractors, construction crews, project managers, engineers, clients, and internal staff to share information, clarify requirements, and coordinate inspection activities.
  • Collaborate with field crews and project teams to resolve issues at the lowest appropriate level, helping to address constructability concerns, nonconforming work, or documentation gaps in a timely manner.
  • Report to the project site daily, meet with the assigned crew, foreman, or project manager, and confirm the inspection tasks and priorities for the day.
  • Observe, inspect, and document contractors’ work throughout the day to confirm that standards, specifications, and project policies are being followed.
  • Use computer software and digital tools (such as Procore, Heavy Job, e-Builder, Bentley Synchro, Excel, Microsoft Word, PDF editors, and related applications) to complete reports, track quantities, and manage project documentation.
  • Work both independently on assigned inspection tasks and as part of a larger inspection team on complex roadway and bridge construction activities.
  • Maintain required certifications and stay current with applicable inspection standards and procedures.
  • Perform physically demanding field inspections in various weather conditions, including the potential for night shifts and varied work hours, as required by project needs.

Essential Skills

  • ACI / FCON (GDOT Concrete) Field Concrete Certificate.
  • Minimum of 2+ years of civil inspection experience specifically in roadway, bridge, reinforced concrete, or site civil inspection projects.
  • Hands-on experience with reinforced concrete inspection activities.
  • Ability to understand and interpret construction plans, specifications, and procedures.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate fluently in a professional field environment.
  • Basic math skills, including the ability to apply geometry and trigonometry to field measurements and quantity calculations.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a project team while also performing independent inspection tasks.
  • Capability to complete daily reports by hand and using a computer.
  • Willingness and physical ability to perform field inspections in various weather conditions and on active construction sites, including potential night work.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in documentation and recordkeeping.
  • Understanding of OSHA Safety Standards and the ability to apply them in the field.
  • Experience inspecting roadway construction activities such as grading, drainage, and pavement construction.
  • Experience inspecting bridge construction activities, including formwork, rebar placement, and concrete pours.
  • High school diploma or GED.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Proficiency or strong comfort with computer software and new technology platforms, including Procore, Heavy Job, e-Builder, Bentley Synchro, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and PDF editing tools.
  • Experience with soils, asphalt, aggregates, and soil mechanics is highly helpful.
  • Traffic control experience, particularly monitoring traffic control setups rather than implementing them, is very helpful.
  • Experience with bridge foundations, including pile driving, drilled shafts, and spread footings, is considered a strong plus.
  • NICET certification is a helpful additional credential.
  • ICC certifications are beneficial for this role.
  • Completion of a GDOT CEIT Program is advantageous.
  • Experience with pit testing, asphalt testing, and traffic control inspection is helpful.
  • Familiarity with inspection and documentation on commercial, municipal, institutional, and heavy highway projects.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to help resolve issues at the field level.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks, prioritize daily activities, and meet reporting deadlines in a fast-paced project environment.

Work Environment

This role is based in the field on a major interstate interchange reconfiguration project involving approximately 8 miles of roadway work, multiple bridge modifications and replacements, lane expansions, and extensive retaining structures. The inspector reports directly to the project site each day, meets with the assigned crew, foreman, or project manager, and spends the majority of the day outdoors observing, inspecting, and documenting construction activities. The work environment includes active highway and bridge construction zones with grading, drainage, pavement, bridge, utility, and erosion control work in progress. Conditions can be noisy, dusty, and physically demanding, with exposure to varying weather conditions throughout the year. Work hours may vary based on project needs and can include day shifts, occasional night shifts, and weekend work to support construction schedules and traffic management requirements. The role emphasizes strict adherence to safety standards and procedures in a high-traffic, heavy-construction setting. The position uses a range of digital tools and software platforms such as Procore, Heavy Job, e-Builder, Bentley Synchro, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, and PDF editors for documentation and coordination. A company vehicle, such as a pickup truck, is provided for travel between home and the job site and for use during daily field inspection activities, supporting efficient access to different areas of the project corridor. The broader project environment is fast-moving and part of an alternative delivery, design-build program focused on large-scale, multi-year highway and bridge improvements, offering exposure to complex infrastructure work and modern project delivery methods.
