JOB DESCRIPTION:
RN - Neonatal ICU (NICU)

About Facility:

  • 247 Licensed Beds
  • Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center
  • Teaching Hospital
  • Chest Pain Center
  • Certified Stroke Center
  • Radius rule: Traveler's permanent address must be 50 miles outside of home unit
  • Unit Information:
  • Beds: 53 plus overflow; patient census on average is 58
  • Required Experience: 2 years of strong Level 3 and/or Level 4 NICU experience. MUST be comfortable in a high acuity, fast paced environment
  • Will you accept a first-time traveler: Must have manager approval on first time travelers, as this will depend on current staffing

Patient Types/Common Diagnoses:

  • Respiratory: Respiratory Distress Syndrome, TTN (Transient Tachypnea of the Newborn, MAS (Meconium Aspiration), Bronchopulmonary Dysplasia, etc.
  • Cardiac: Congenital Heart Defects (TOF, VSD, HLHS), PDA, Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN), etc.
  • Neuro: Seizures, IVH, Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy
  • GI/GU/Musculoskeletal/Endocrine: Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC), Feeding Intolerance, GER, Acute/Chronic Renal Failure, Birth Trauma, Congenital Anomalies, Sepsis, NAS, TORCH infections, Hypothermia, Hypoglycemia, etc.

Patient Ratios:

  • RN: Varies on acuity: 1:1, 1:2, 1:3

Required Licensure & Certifications:

  • RN: BLS, NRP

Skills required:

  • EPIC experience, EVDs, Camino device (ICP and temp monitoring device), management of critical care vasoactive drip titration, management of invasive lines – ART lines/CVP, aseptic and sterile techniques, basic dressing changes, ventilator and trach management, HOFV management, oral/nasal suctioning, g-tube/j-tube management, feeding tubes, chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs, sedation and analgesic drip management, foley insertion and management, Alaris and Medfusion pump management, bedside procedures with providers, discharge skills, CRRT experience, baby side of ECMO (manager has been flexible on EVD, ICP, ECMO, and CRRT exp)

Support within the Department:

  • Unit Secretary every shift
  • Charge nurse, 24/7
  • IV/VAT/PCVC Team, 24/7
  • Resource Nurse
  • RT, 24/7
  • Intensivist, 24/7
  • Residents, in house
  • APP, in house
  • Centralized and bedside Tele monitoring
  • Unit Based Educators (AM and PM)
  • Clinical Supervisors x 6

Technology/Equipment:

  • EMR: EPIC
  • IV Pump: Alaris and Medfusion syringe pumps
  • Med Dispensing: Omnicell
  • Monitors: Phillips
  • Equipment: PIV Ultrasound and Tecotherm
  • Breast Milk Scanning: MOMs
  • Floating: If yes, where?
  • Neonatal PCU
  • Gen Peds – will float as needed to Pediatric CVICU, PICU, and general Peds unit as a helping hand unless they have prior experience in any of these populations

Orientation (facility and unit):

  • NEO
  • 2 days departmental

Scheduling:

  • Weekend rotation: will be required to work 2 Fridays and 2 Mondays, plus every other weekend (Sat/Sun) every 6-week schedule
  • The combination of the 2 Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays can be grouped together or worked separately as long as those eight (8) shifts occur within the 6-week period
  • No call for travelers, if the NICU cannot utilize them, they may be floated to similar units as listed above
  • Holiday Expectations: Travelers will work holidays as scheduled
  • Unit requirement is the Eve and/or Day after holiday and day of holiday, every other holiday while contracted
  • RTO: Manager approval – would prefer travelers not have a significant amount of RTO needs, if they do they will need to extend contract to accommodate
  • Shift times: 0645-1915 and 1845-0715
  • Schedule cycle: every 6 weeks based on unit needs after team schedule is completed/approved. Clinical Supervisor will provide dates of need.

Other notes:

  • Scrub Color: Navy
  • Dress Code: May wear long sleeve shirt if needed but must be solid Navy or White. No tight scrubs. Pediatric friendly scrub tops. Please refrain from wearing other organizational branded attire.
  • Practice Guidelines: "Bare Below Elbow” in nurseries – meaning no watches, permanent jewelry, rings – real or plastic. No artificial nails.
  • Parking: Free
