Job Description

The Microarray Operator supports overnight production operations by setting daily priorities, operating and supervising microarray equipment, and ensuring high-quality output in a regulated cleanroom environment. This role works on the 3rd shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday, and focuses on machine setup, troubleshooting, quality checks, and accurate documentation in accordance with Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in setting the daily production schedule, establishing priorities, and delegating tasks to support efficient workflow.
  • Supervise and set up microarray machines, including changeovers, basic troubleshooting, and handling rejected or defective products to maintain smooth daily operations.
  • Monitor team members’ production output for quality using PLC controls, routine quality inspection checks, integrity testing, and visual inspections.
  • Track and document the number of rejected products due to defects during quality checks and promptly notify the management team of any issues or trends.
  • Perform regular data entry into the ERP system (Oracle) to maintain accurate and timely production and quality records.
  • Follow work instructions, product specifications, and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to perform all tasks and maintain high-quality data and documentation.
  • Utilize laboratory equipment such as pipettes, centrifuges, biosafety cabinets (BSC), and degas systems to prepare and provide materials required to run microarrayers.
  • Share knowledge with colleagues and serve as a lead trainer for co-workers and new hires when applicable.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on equipment as required to ensure reliable operation and minimize downtime.
  • Carry out quarterly maintenance activities, including cleaning the cleanrooms according to established protocols.
  • Follow designated GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice), safety guidelines, and personal protective equipment (PPE) standards at all times.
  • Properly handle, store, and discard hazardous materials such as buffers and chemicals in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Follow daily and weekly laboratory cleaning routines using 5S principles to maintain an organized and efficient workspace.
  • Work consistently to meet daily production goals while minimizing machine and process downtime.
  • Communicate effectively with the management team and maintenance staff to address equipment issues, process improvements, and operational needs.
  • Participate in and attend departmental and company meetings as required.
  • Adhere to the attendance policy and maintain reliable, consistent presence on the 3rd shift.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support production, quality, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Essential Skills

  • Experience working in an FDA-approved cleanroom environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate more than one machine in a production or manufacturing setting.
  • Strong attention to detail to perform accurate inspections, data entry, and documentation.
  • Experience wearing and working in personal protective equipment (PPE) for extended periods.
  • Hands-on experience with machine operation in a production environment.
  • Ability to work with PLC-controlled equipment for monitoring and basic troubleshooting.
  • Comfort working in a cleanroom environment following ISO and medical device standards.
  • Ability to perform routine inspections and quality checks on products and processes.
  • Basic computer operation skills to perform ERP data entry and maintain records.
  • Ability to follow written work instructions, SOPs, and product specifications precisely.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members, management, and maintenance staff.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with ERP systems, preferably Oracle, for production and quality data entry.
  • Experience in a medical device or similarly regulated manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) principles and their application in daily work.
  • Experience using laboratory equipment such as pipettes, centrifuges, biosafety cabinets (BSC), and degas systems.
  • Exposure to 5S or other lean manufacturing and workplace organization methodologies.
  • Ability to assist with training new team members on processes, equipment, and quality standards.
  • Comfort performing preventive and basic maintenance tasks on production equipment.

Work Environment

This role is based in a temperature-controlled, FDA-approved cleanroom production environment on the 3rd shift from 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., Sunday through Thursday. You will work around microarray production equipment, PLC-controlled machinery, and laboratory tools such as pipettes, centrifuges, biosafety cabinets (BSC), and degas systems. The position requires consistent use of PPE and adherence to cleanroom protocols, including wearing a smock, hair net, and shoe covers. Work is performed following GMP, ISO, and medical device standards, with structured cleaning routines and 5S practices to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient facility.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Buffalo Grove, IL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $19.00 - $21.00/hr.
