Position Summary
The Midwife provides comprehensive, evidence-based care to pregnant and postpartum individuals, including prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and newborn care. The role emphasizes patient education, shared decision-making, and safe, compassionate care aligned with clinical guidelines and regulatory requirements.
Prenatal Care
- Conduct initial and ongoing prenatal assessments (history, physical exam, labs, screenings).
- Monitor maternal and fetal wellbeing according to clinical standards.
- Identify high-risk conditions and collaborate with or refer to obstetricians as needed.
- Provide education on nutrition, lifestyle, pregnancy expectations, childbirth options, and warning signs.
- Manage common prenatal complaints (nausea, fatigue, anemia, infections, etc.).
Labor & Delivery Care
- Provide continuous support throughout labor and birth.
- Monitor fetal heart tones and maternal vital signs.
- Administer or recommend comfort and pain-relief measures.
- Perform vaginal deliveries and manage normal childbirth.
- Recognize complications early and escalate when needed.
- Manage third-stage labor, including prevention of postpartum hemorrhage.
Postpartum Care
- Assess maternal recovery (physical and emotional).
- Support breastfeeding and newborn bonding.
- Screen for postpartum depression and complications.
- Provide family-planning counseling and contraceptive services.
- Perform routine newborn assessments and refer concerns as needed.
Gynecologic & Reproductive Health
- Conduct well-woman exams (Pap, STI screening, breast exams).
- Provide contraception management.
- Manage common gynecologic concerns.
- Deliver preconception and fertility counseling.
Documentation & Compliance
- Chart all care accurately and timely in the EHR.
- Follow organizational protocols, state laws, and national guidelines.
- Participate in quality assurance, peer review, and continuing education.
- Maintain appropriate licensure and certifications (NRP, BLS).
Collaboration & Communication
- Work closely with OB/GYN physicians, nurses, doulas, lactation consultants, and pediatric teams.
- Communicate clearly with patients and families.
- Participate in team meetings and interdisciplinary planning.
Required Qualifications
- Requires a current Louisiana license as either a Certified Nurse Midwife (APRN) or a Licensed Midwife (CPM), in good standing and meeting all state requirements.
- Experience in labor & delivery preferred.
- Strong communication and assessment skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in birth center or hospital midwifery.
- EMR documentation experience.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish, Vietnamese).
Work Environment
- May involve rotating shifts, nights, weekends, and on-call duty.
- Requires standing for long periods, assisting in deliveries, and responding to emergencies.
- Must be able to work with a diverse team and patient panel
