Role Overview
The ICU Float RN will work across multiple critical care units in Zone 1, including MICU, SICU, TICU, CVICU, and various specialty ICUs.
There is NO home base facility, and the RN must float to any assigned hospital within a 60-mile radius of Colorado Springs.
Zone 1 facilities include:
- St. Francis Medical Center
- St. Francis InterQuest
- St. Mary Corwin
- St. Thomas More
This role requires a strong ICU background and the ability to manage high-acuity patients across various intensive care settings.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct care for critically ill adult and geriatric patients
- Manage ICU-level acuity with ratios 1:1 to 1:2 (may flex to 1:3)
- Titrate all critical drips including pressors, sedation, paralytics, insulin, antiarrhythmics, and heparin
- Interpret cardiac monitoring; ICUs do not have telemetry/monitor techs
- Manage ventilators, BiPAP, CPAP, high-flow oxygen, and assist with RT needs
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across multiple hospitals
- Float to ICU, PCU, and MS/Tele when needed
- Work 6–9 weekend shifts in each 6-week schedule
- Follow facility protocols and maintain accurate documentation in Epic EMR
Requirements
- Active RN license (CO or Compact)
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience
- First-time travelers must have 3+ years of ICU experience and Epic experience
- Certifications:
- BLS (AHA)
- ACLS (AHA)
- NIHSS
- TNCC
- Must be able to float across all Zone 1 facilities (up to 60 miles)
- Must be in Colorado for orientation week
Unit & Facility Details
- Charting: Epic – EpicCare Inpatient
- Orientation: 12 hours + 1–2 days with preceptor
- Trauma Level: Not specified
- Scrub Color: Any color
- No CNA support (only sitters provided)
- RT Support: ICU-dedicated RT, but RNs expected to troubleshoot respiratory needs
- Must read and interpret own telemetry strips
