Position Title: Medical Assistant
Founded in 1954, The Arc Rockland provides vital supports and services to people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) enabling them to remain in their communities. The Arc Rockland provides a comprehensive range of services to people,
 from early childhood education, into adulthood, and through their senior years.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Perform administrative and certain clinical duties under the direction of office manager, nurse practitioner and/or physician. Administrative duties may include scheduling appointments, maintaining medical records, billing, and coding information for insurance purposes, and obtaining prior authorizations. Clinical duties may include taking and recording vital signs and medical histories, preparing patients for examination, drawing blood, and administering medications as directed by physician.
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent; graduation from a medical assisting program accredited by CAAHEP or ABHES preferred.
Minimum Experience: At least 1 year experience in an outpatient setting. Experience working with people with intellectual disabilities is preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities (KSAs): Must be able to perform CPR; effective communication skills, including active listening in order to understand and accurately record patient issues and specifications; organizational and clerical skills; possess medical knowledge and knowledge about safety and sanitation in a healthcare environment; strong computer skills to facilitate use of an EMR for documentation, etc. Understand, speak, and write English language.
Required Certification/Registration: CMA (AAMA) certification preferred.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to squat/kneel on the floor and execute compressions to perform CPR; prolonged periods of sitting; have visual acuity to read computer screen text and all modes of correspondence; have hearing acuity to accurately hear and interpret speech in person and over telephone at normal volumes; typing dexterity, speed, and accuracy to document all activity and utilize an Electronic Medical Health Record system.
Working Conditions: Frequent contact with patients/ individuals in program. Environmentally controlled; office space for private patient consulting sessions

Any employee who witnesses or learns about a violation or possible violation of agency or governing body rules, regulations or policies and procedures is required to immediately report this to his/her supervisor or the agency’s corporate compliance officer.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Perform various front desk operations such as greeting patients and performing Check in/Check out functions; scheduling and confirming of appointments as well as verifying insurance and collecting co-pays and/or payments on account balances. Ensure friendly communication to
facilitate the collection of documentation and information for new patients or additional services for existing patients. Create new patient records; answer phones and take messages.

Obtain prior authorizations for insurances and forward information to billing company to ensure services are covered prior to being rendered. Conduct any necessary follow up.

Prepare patients for the health care visit by directing and/or accompanying them to the exam room and helping them position themselves for the exam.

Assist Physician during examination by verifying patient information by interviewing patient and/or caregiver; reviewing and recording medical histories; taking vitals, height, and weight; confirming chief complaint and purpose of visit.

Support patient care delivery by helping providers prepare laboratory specimens; performing basic laboratory tests on premises; drawing blood; disposing of contaminated supplies; sterilizing
medical instruments; taking EKGs; removing sutures and changing dressings.

Educate patients/caregivers by providing medication and diet information, instructions and answering questions.

Complete electronic health records by recording patient examination, treatment and test results as
well as generate revenues by recording billing/coding information for services rendered.
