Graduate Assistant Softball Coach

Job Description
The Assistant Softball Coach is responsible for supporting the head coach in the overall management of the softball program including practice planning, implementation of game strategy, recruitment, player development and organizing community service projects. Graduate Assistant Coach (GA) must be willing and able to recruit throughout the summer, if arranged. Night and weekend hours are required, and facilities are off-campus. The assistant coach will be responsible for coaching during the traditional season in the spring and the non-traditional season in the fall. This person works under the direction of the Head Softball Coach.
Ability to assess, identify and successfully recruit student-athletes. Responsible for assisting coaching staff in carrying out all activities necessary to accomplish the objectives of this sport within the guidelines of the NAIA and the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. Strong ability to enhance player development. Provide an example of leadership and competitive but sportsmanlike conduct. Become familiar with and implement all necessary college policies, rules, regulations, and guidelines as they relate to this position, including student rights and responsibilities concerning harassment of any kind and drug and alcohol use.
Professionalism
- Carry yourself on and off campus as an employee and representative of Oklahoma Wesleyan University
- Maintain professional relationships with other school employees including coaches and athletic director
- Refrain from inappropriate and unnecessary comments, especially around student-athletes
- Maintain the confidentiality of coaching staff discussions and decisions
Practice
- Create daily practice plans for defensive section of practice in area of which you oversee
- Report to Coach on injuries or consecutive sessions that have gone poorly
- Fill in as a runner or fielder when needed during practice
- Assist with post-practice evaluation
Game Day
- Assist with field preparation
- Keep necessary charts on teams
- Communicate any schedule changes (game or practice) to managers
- Know game signals, able to fill in if necessary
- Organize team meals between games
- Drive team van when needed
Junior Varsity Team
- Assume responsibilities of head coach of the junior varsity team
- Travel with junior varsity team to away games and make necessary arrangements for meals
Recruiting
- Respond promptly to emails sent by the Head Coach
- Communicate with coaches and players as directed
- Keep a calendar of recruits coming to tour campus
- Assist with campus tours
- Attend recruiting tournaments as directed to observe student-athletes
- Stay updated with recruiting board (top prospects, correspondence, incoming commitments, etc)
Office/Administrative
- Assist with mental training, team bonding, and other activities as directed by the Head Coach
- Help organize community outreach events
- Be responsible for team study hall and communicate with Student Success Center on required study hall hours for players
- Assist with eligibility for current players
- Assist with creating fundraising opportunities and managing the budget receipts from such opportunities
Other
- Report all instances of breaking campus or team rules to Head Coach
- Set the example to our athletes on and off the field
- Maintain a 3.0 GPA in the graduate program and act professionally in all classes and interactions with professors
- Attend weekly meetings to discuss game and practice quality and make suggestions for changes that need to be made
- Other tasks given by the Head Coach
- Work Winter and Spring Commencement events
- Work university-wide special events when called upon by the Office of the President
