CERTIFIED MEDICAL ASSISTANT
JOB SUMMARY
The Medical Assistant for AAPHC works under the supervision of the Director of Nursing, Business Manager and Nurse Manager performing a variety of general health, and clerical procedures for effective management of health problems in the patient population served through the health center. This position requires a thorough knowledge and understanding of all clinical and clerical systems and procedures in effect at the center.
Duties and Responsibilities
FRONT DESK:
- Cross trained to register and schedule patients.
- Back up-front desk and phones as requested.
- Pull, file, collate materials into medical records which include charts for next day appointments.
NURSING:
- Under supervision, functions in an accurate and efficient manner to provide quality care and complete patient safety.
- Prepares exam rooms and equipment for each appointment.
- Takes vital signs, completes clinical records, and prepares patient for physician examination and treatment. Allergies are written in red.
- Assists provider with examinations and procedures but not limited to ear irrigation, pelvic exams, minor surgery, dressings, EKG's, etc.
- Assists with other nursing and laboratory procedures under the supervision of nursing personnel.
- Maintains cleanliness of all clinical area, washes and sterilizes instruments, maintains adequate stock of supplies. Orders lab supplies.
- Performs phlebotomy using skilled techniques following nursing policy and procedures regarding labeling, transport, accession into lab computer.
- Performs waive testing procedures using skilled techniques following laboratory policy and procedures.
- Provide patient education pertaining to patient condition or preventive care. Documents patient education in progress notes and encounter for reporting purposes.
- Demonstrates patient advocacy which assures patients' right to privacy, safety, and confidentiality.
- Understands HIPAA requirements and conducts clinical and business processes that ensure patient privacy as a priority.
- Gives a thorough and complete explanation of the Medicare waiver of liability form if anticipated service may not be covered under Medicare. All forms are to be signed, dated and reason for possible denial documented.
- May schedule patient appointments for follow-up visits, no-show, and referrals to other providers and agencies as indicated.
- Referrals are made at providers direction using computers log to document referral. Provides timely feedback to provider is appointment is not kept.
- Responsible for retrieval and dissemination of information for the providers in their care and treatment of the patients.
- Answers and directs all incoming calls to nursing and handles appropriately. Takes messages and gives routine information in accordance with established procedures. Accurately documents all messages; gets messages to provider timely; and ensures patient has a return call regarding their request or concern.
- Keeping with Georgia law, notifies patient of lab results within 14 days of provider receiving the results. Patient will be notified through Televox Labcall system or contact by telephone and/or card notification. Notification will be documented in the medical record.
- Works with nursing and other staff to route patient charts to proper location notifying involved parties when charts cannot be found.
- Completes appropriate forms as directed per supervisor.
- Attends meetings as requested. Participates in in-service program and skills fair.
- Available to cover any clinics as necessary.
- Demonstrates age specific competencies that will be evaluated through direct observation and QI process (information from chart reviews, patient/peer/physician feedback, variance reports, and other mechanisms as indicated).
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
High school diploma and graduation from a technical school program which prepare student for certificate by the State of Georgia. Certificate of State certification preferred. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification. Basic clinical and laboratory skills are essential. Knowledge of medical terminology. Pleasant disposition and ability to communicate effectively with patients and coworkers is a must.
Typical Physical Demands
Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patients, manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination. Requires standing and walking for prolonged periods of time. Occasionally lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stressful conditions and working irregular hours. Requires exposure to communicable diseases or bodily fluids.
Qualifications

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS
Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a clinic environment. Needs to be flexible to stay late as required to complete daily processes.
