Our organization is excited to announce an opportunity for a Vascular Neurologist on a research career development pathway to join our expanding cerebrovascular team. This role will integrate into a network of specialized academic physicians, fellows, residents, and advanced practice providers, delivering top-tier care across our health system, which encompasses a comprehensive stroke center, a thrombectomy-capable stroke center, a primary stroke center, and six hospitals equipped for acute stroke management.
Key Responsibilities
In this role, you will be expected to demonstrate advanced expertise in vascular neurology, providing care for complex cerebrovascular patients both in-person and through telestroke services. Your clinical duties will include:
- Delivering direct inpatient and outpatient care for patients experiencing stroke and other intricate cerebrovascular issues.
- Supporting a comprehensive telemedicine network that includes integrated longitudinal inpatient care and urgent stroke consultations throughout our health system.
- Collaborating with neurocritical care specialists, cerebrovascular neurosurgeons, and neuro-interventionalists to ensure seamless patient care.
- Leading innovative quality improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing patient care and exploring new healthcare delivery models.
- Incorporating educational opportunities into clinical practice for trainees, including stroke fellows, neurocritical care fellows, endovascular surgical neuroradiology fellows, residents, and medical students.
Research Development
During your designated research time, you will:
- Engage in selected coursework at the University of Minnesota's esteemed School of Public Health, focusing on methodology and grant-writing. Pursuing a Master's Degree in clinical research is highly encouraged, with tuition support provided by the Stroke Program.
- Work on self-directed research projects under mentorship, aiming for submission for additional grant funding.
- Have the chance to lead significant local, national, and international clinical trials.
- Explore additional opportunities for research, teaching, and leadership based on qualifications.
Position Structure
This three-year track is designed for those aspiring to become clinician scientists, mirroring the structure of an NIH career development award with dedicated research time:
- Year 1: 50% protected time for research career development and participation in the NIH StrokeNet Research Fellowship.
- Years 2 and 3: At least 25% protected time, with flexibility based on individual career aspirations and additional internal funding obtained during Year 1.
Working Conditions
This position is open to candidates seeking O1 visa waivers. Our stroke program is transitioning to a shift model to minimize overnight calls, reflecting our commitment to a sustainable and positive work environment that fosters excellence in academic and non-clinical endeavors.

Qualifications
To be considered for this role, candidates should possess:
- A medical degree along with completion of an ACGME-accredited neurology residency and vascular neurology fellowship.
- A strong commitment to educating trainees and contributing to clinical research.
- A keen interest in telemedicine, although prior telestroke experience is not mandatory.
- A current or eligible unrestricted Minnesota State Medical License.
- Board Certification or eligibility; if not yet certified, there is an expectation to achieve certification within two years of hire.
- Support for qualified J1 applicants.
