Job Purpose
The Clinical Psychologist supports psychological assessments, mental health medical standards evaluations, and policy development for the Air Force Accession Medical Waiver Directorate.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Support AMWD/CMO by helping formulate case dispositions, draft responses, and contribute to policy development; provide strategic input for planning, scheduling, administrative support, tasking functions, consultation, meeting participation, and briefing development as needed.
- Serve as the mental‑health subject matter expert to review and generate medical documentation, interpret DoD and Air Force guidance, conduct telehealth or in‑person evaluations, and provide adjudication recommendations for mental‑health related cases within AMWD and aeromedical programs, ensuring all recommendations meet production standards.
- Review global mental‑health examination cases for completeness, interview disqualified applicants, summarize medical history and program applicability, and ensure accurate data entry across HQ AFAC databases and templates within 20 business days.
- Track cases throughout the full evaluation lifecycle and maintain consistent communication with staff, bases, and stakeholders through email, video conferencing, phone calls, and face‑to‑face interaction; provide updates to external customers and assist with responses to inquiries or objections regarding AMWD decisions.
- Coordinate evaluations with WHASC, SAMMC, AF medical consultants, in‑house consultants, and other agencies, applying all required government and departmental standards including DAFMAN 48‑123, DoDI 6130.03 Vols. 1–2, the AF Waiver Guide, and AFAC/AM protocols.
- Prepare all administrative review and certification documentation within required timelines, dispatch HIPAA‑ and Privacy Act–compliant correspondence, and notify the AMWD Chief Physician, Branch Chief, or COR when cases deviate from standards or indicate unsuitability.
- Maintain current knowledge of DoD, Air Force, and government‑wide publications and directives; conduct required research to ensure proper application of policies, protocols, and guidance; and disseminate AFAC/AM or AFMED policy updates to appropriate advisors and leadership.
- Participate in special projects such as AF or DoD‑level meetings, conferences, and instructional events; and travel to HQ AFAC for initial orientation and at least annually for coordination with AMWD leadership and provider staff.
Qualifications
- Shall possess a valid, full, active, unrestricted psychology license in good standing from any U.S. jurisdiction. There shall not be any history of adverse actions against the applicant in the last ten (10) years.
- Minimum three (3) years as a military Biomedical Science Corps officer & psychologist within the last 15 years.
- Experience in applying military medical standards and conducting special operational evaluations, including (but not limited to) clinical interviews/assessments for special duty applicants or accession candidates, and initial certification evaluations for flying/special duty applicants.
- Experience in performing medical standards consultation, specifically in the areas of military service standards and equivalent civilian occupational placement standards.
- Strong communication skills.
Education
- Shall possess a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) or equivalent level degree and fulfilled a residency or intern training year acceptable to the U.S. Air Force Surgeon General.
