Job DescriptionPosition Overview

The Junior Mechanical Estimator supports the preconstruction and estimating team by assisting with takeoffs, bid preparation, vendor coordination, and project documentation for commercial HVAC and mechanical construction projects. This role is ideal for someone early in their estimating career who has a background in HVAC, piping, or mechanical construction and is looking to grow within a commercial mechanical contractor environment.

Projects may include commercial office buildings, healthcare facilities, industrial plants, educational campuses, and manufacturing facilities, requiring strong attention to detail and coordination with project teams.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with reviewing construction drawings, specifications, and bid documents.
  • Perform quantity takeoffs for ductwork, piping, HVAC equipment, and mechanical systems.
  • Support preparation of bid proposals, estimate summaries, and scope breakdowns.
  • Coordinate with vendors and subcontractors to obtain pricing and scope coverage.
  • Assist with maintaining estimate files, bid logs, and historical pricing databases.
  • Participate in pre-bid meetings, walkthroughs, and internal estimating reviews.
  • Work closely with Project Managers and Senior Estimators during project turnover and bid handoff.
  • Help identify scope gaps and coordination issues during the bidding process.
  • Support value engineering and cost comparison exercises.
  • Maintain communication with internal teams to ensure accurate project information and deadlines are met.

Qualifications

  • 1–3+ years of experience in mechanical construction, HVAC, or estimating support roles.
  • Exposure to commercial HVAC or mechanical systems preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Basic understanding of construction workflows, materials, and labor tracking.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and estimating software such as Bluebeam or similar tools.
  • Strong communication and willingness to learn in a team-oriented environment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Field experience in HVAC, piping, or mechanical installation.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Familiarity with takeoff software or estimating platforms such as FastPIPE, QuoteSoft, or Trimble.
