Job Description

Mechanical Systems Engineer

The Mechanical Systems Engineer is responsible for improving the reliability, performance, and longevity of critical mechanical equipment throughout the foundry. This role focuses on diagnosing equipment failures, performing technical analysis of breakdowns, and developing permanent corrective solutions that improve uptime and reduce recurring maintenance issues.

Unlike a traditional design engineering role, this position is highly hands-on and closely integrated with plant operations. The engineer works directly with maintenance technicians and production teams to investigate failures, evaluate equipment performance, and implement mechanical improvements. The goal of the position is to replace reactive, temporary repairs with structured engineering solutions that improve equipment reliability and operational stability.

The Mechanical Systems Engineer will analyze mechanical systems such as furnaces, conveyors, cranes, mold handling equipment, vibration systems, hydraulics, and other critical foundry machinery. Through root cause analysis and engineering evaluation, this role will identify the underlying causes of equipment failures and develop practical solutions that can be implemented by the maintenance team.

Responsibilities

• Investigate mechanical equipment failures and perform structured root cause analysis to determine underlying causes

• Work directly with maintenance teams to diagnose breakdowns and evaluate damaged components

• Develop permanent corrective actions that prevent recurring failures

• Evaluate mechanical systems including furnaces, conveyors, cranes, hydraulic systems, vibration equipment, and material handling systems

• Identify weak points in existing equipment designs and develop mechanical improvements or modifications

• Support maintenance teams by providing technical guidance during major repairs and troubleshooting efforts

• Develop documentation and repair standards to improve consistency of maintenance practices

• Analyze equipment performance trends to identify opportunities for reliability improvements

• Assist in the installation, commissioning, and optimization of new equipment or system upgrades

• Ensure that equipment repairs and modifications maintain safety and regulatory compliance

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related discipline

• Strong understanding of mechanical systems including rotating equipment, structural loads, hydraulics, and power transmission

• Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment failures in an industrial or manufacturing environment

• Ability to perform root cause analysis and develop corrective actions

• Willingness to work directly with maintenance teams on the production floor

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in heavy manufacturing, foundries, steel mills, mining, or similar industrial environments

• Experience with vibration analysis, failure analysis, or reliability engineering

• Knowledge of welding, fabrication, and industrial repair practices

• Familiarity with maintenance systems, preventive maintenance planning, or reliability programs

Key Skills

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are essential for diagnosing mechanical failures and identifying the true causes of equipment breakdowns. This role requires the ability to translate engineering analysis into practical repair solutions that can be implemented in a production environment. The engineer must also communicate effectively with maintenance technicians and production personnel to ensure that improvements are understood and properly executed.
