Position Summary:
The Director of Team Development is a critical leadership role at New Birth Missionary Baptist Church, entrusted with cultivating a Christ-centered, high-performance culture across staff and volunteer teams. This leader serves as the chief culture carrier, ensuring New Birth’s behavioral values and ministry culture are deeply integrated into every level of the organization, from hiring and onboarding to team development and professional growth.
This role oversees all aspects of Team Development, including recruitment, onboarding, performance-based goals, and behavioral expectations, while reinforcing culture-based hiring practices and training systems. They will design and implement ongoing professional development and cultural formation programs that equip staff and volunteers to reflect and reinforce the heart of New Birth in everything they do.
In addition to leading HR functions, this individual is responsible for building framework that empowers team members across every ministry, driving unity, accountability, and growth. Above all, this leader must carry and champion the vision of the Senior Pastor ensuring that every staff member and team is aligned, equipped, and mobilized to move the mission of New Birth forward.
Key Responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership & Organizational Alignment.
· Serve as the senior leader of HR and team culture, supporting the church’s mission, organizational health, and long-term effectiveness.
· Collaborate with executive leadership to define staff structures and build clear pathways for growth and accountability.
· Monitor organizational and departmental goals, driving clarity, alignment, and execution in accordance with Dr. Bryant’s strategic vision.
· Promote and protect culture of spiritual vibrancy, professionalism, and innovation.
Human Resources Oversight
· Oversee all HR functions, including hiring, legal compliance, employee relations, and compensation strategy.
· Maintain and evolve employee handbooks, performance review systems, and HR policies in alignment with biblical values and employment law.
· Ensure consistent application of behavioral expectations and performance standards across all teams.
· The omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar or related. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Recruitment & Staff Onboarding
· Lead all hiring initiatives to attract top-tier ministry and support talent.
· Develop and manage onboarding and orientation programs that reinforce New Birth’s values and expectations from Day One.
· Create clear role descriptions, metrics for success, and cultural markers for every position, ensuring alignment with the Senior Pastor’s goals and direction.
Performance Management & Staff Development
· Design and oversee a robust performance management system tied to measurable, role-specific goals and church-wide vision.
· Provide leadership coaching and training to department heads, helping them become strong managers of people and culture.
· Establish regular performance reviews focused on both outcomes and behavior, using coaching frameworks that encourage both excellence and growth.
· Implement and uphold a clear disciplinary process that includes verbal coaching, written documentation, and–when necessary–transition individuals off the team who are unwilling or unable to meet performance-based goals and behavioral expectations.
Team Development & Leadership Pipeline
· Build a scalable leadership development process to identify, equip, and elevate leaders at every level of the church.
· Organize trainings, retreats, and development experiences that foster teamwork, collaboration, and spiritual maturity.
· Support department leaders in creating action plans for staff growth, succession planning, and team alignment.
Culture Building & Engagement
· Champion a Christ-centered culture where mission, morale, and ministry excellence are consistently elevated.
· Serve as a culture architect, shaping staff rhythms, communication practices, and internal events that promote unity and inspiration.
· Monitor staff engagement, identify risks, and design strategic interventions to maintain high retention and satisfaction.
· Model and steward a culture that actively reflects and supports the spiritual, relational, and leadership priorities set by the Senior Pastor.
Education & Professional Development:
· Create and oversee a church-wide education strategy that includes internal and external learning opportunities.
· Facilitate professional development tracks tailored to ministry, leadership, and administrative roles.
· Partner with outside organizations, conferences, and schools to provide continued education and ministry training for staff.
· Encourage a culture of learning and growth by budgeting for, tracking, and celebrating staff participation in development activities.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Organizational Leadership, Business, or a related field (Master’s preferred).
· 7+ years of experience in HR leadership and team development, preferably with a church, non-profit, or mission-driven organization.
· Proven ability to implement performance-based goals and coach staff toward behavioral and professional growth.
· Strong knowledge of employment law, employee relations, and organizational strategy.
· Excellent interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.
· Demonstrated commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and alignment with the mission, culture, and vision of the Senior Pastor and New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
Spiritual & Cultural Fit:
· Must be a committed follower of Jesus Christ, living a life that reflects spiritual maturity, biblical integrity, and alignment with the values of New Birth Missionary Baptist Church.
· Must be an active member (or become a member upon hire) of New Birth, fully engaged in the spiritual life and community of the church.
· Expected to regularly attend Sunday worship, churchwide events, team prayer, and other ministry activities, modeling visible spiritual leadership.
· Must faithfully support the vision and leadership of the Senior Pastor, carrying the heart of the house and promoting unity, loyalty, and alignment across all teams and environments.
