  • Job Title: Controller - Real Estate

  • Salary: $150k-$220k

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and financial operations for our real estate portfolio. This role partners with property management, operations, and executive leadership to drive financial performance, improve processes, and deliver timely, actionable financial information to support strategic decisions.

The ideal candidate will oversee accurate financial reporting, budgeting and forecasting, internal controls, cash management, and compliance with GAAP and tax requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Financial Reporting & Close: Manage month-end and year-end close processes; prepare consolidated financial statements and supporting schedules in accordance with GAAP. Develop and present monthly/quarterly financial reports, variance analysis, and KPIs to senior leadership and investors.

  • Budgeting & Forecasting: Lead budgeting, forecasting, and long-range financial modeling for portfolios and individual properties; analyze performance against plan and recommend corrective actions.

  • Treasury & Cash Management: Oversee accounts payable, accounts receivable, cash management, and treasury functions, including bank reconciliations and cash flow forecasting.

  • Controls & Compliance: Establish and maintain strong internal controls, policies, and procedures to safeguard company assets. Coordinate external audits, tax filings, and compliance activities with auditors and tax advisors.

  • Team Leadership: Manage and mentor the accounting team, handling hiring, training, performance management, and professional development.

  • Operations & Systems: Partner with property management to standardize accounting practices and implement/improve accounting systems or ERP solutions (e.g., Yardi, MRI). Drive process improvements and automation.

  • Deal Support: Support acquisition and disposition activity by performing diligence, purchase accounting, and integration of acquired assets.

Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field required.

  • Experience: Minimum 6 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a Controller

  • Industry Expertise: Demonstrated experience in real estate accounting (property-level reporting, CAM reconciliations, rent roll analysis, ASC 842 lease accounting, and investment-level reporting). Residential real estate experience is a plus.

  • Technical Skills: Strong knowledge of GAAP, financial reporting, tax compliance, and internal controls. Proficiency with Yardi or MRI, advanced Excel skills, and ERP implementation experience (a plus).

  • Soft Skills: High attention to detail, strong analytical skills, and excellent communication skills for presenting financial data to non-financial stakeholders and managing external partners (investors, lenders).
