Job Description

Overview

The Executive Director will lead the organization through its next phase of growth—strengthening its mission, advancing digital capabilities, and ensuring long-term impact. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director serves as the organization’s chief executive, responsible for strategic direction, operations, partnerships, fundraising, and culture.

The Executive Director will oversee a national team of professionals and volunteers, fostering innovation, accountability, and inclusion. The ideal candidate is both a visionary and a builder—someone who can inspire others, drive strategic transformation, and operationalize a modern, data-informed nonprofit model.

Responsibilities:

Strategic Leadership

  • Lead the implementation of organizational strategy to strengthen sustainability, expand reach, and grow revenue.
  • Champion digital transformation, integrating virtual engagement, digital content, and data-driven decision-making.
  • Collaborate with the Board to define long-term direction, priorities, and governance best practices.
  • Ensure all programs and initiatives align with mission, impact goals, and financial health.

Organizational & Operational Management

  • Oversee a distributed team across program delivery, digital strategy, fundraising, and operations.
  • Build a culture of accountability, learning, innovation, and inclusion.
  • Manage organizational performance through clear goals, budgets, and KPIs.
  • Partner with finance and administrative leadership to ensure strong fiscal management and compliance.
  • Maintain oversight of legal, HR, and risk management functions.

Fundraising & External Relations

  • Serve as the organization’s chief ambassador, deepening relationships with donors, partners, and community stakeholders.
  • Expand philanthropic and earned income streams through cultivation of individual, foundation, and corporate supporters.
  • Represent the organization in media, events, and external forums, serving as an inspiring and credible public voice.

Program & Impact Oversight

  • Ensure all programs deliver measurable outcomes aligned with community and stakeholder needs.
  • Collaborate with program and digital teams to enhance reach and accessibility through technology and innovation.
  • Utilize data and impact metrics to strengthen programs, guide continuous improvement, and support fundraising efforts.

Board Relations & Governance

  • Partner with the Board Chair and Directors to ensure clarity around strategic priorities, organizational performance, and governance effectiveness.
  • Provide transparent reporting on impact, operations, and financial health.
  • Support board development and recruitment efforts that reflect diverse skills and perspectives.

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of progressive nonprofit leadership, including executive-level management of strategy, operations, and teams.
  • Proven success leading organizational growth, change management, or digital transformation initiatives.
  • Demonstrated experience in fundraising, partnership development, and financial stewardship.
  • Understanding of or experience in human services, education, or related community-focused sectors preferred.
  • Exceptional communication and relationship-building skills across diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience managing hybrid or distributed teams effectively.
  • Strategic, data-informed, and results-oriented thinker.
  • Mission-driven, empathetic, and collaborative leadership style.
  • Digital fluency and a commitment to innovation.
