Role Summary

The Veterinary Technician I will engage in assisting veterinarians with animal wellness examinations and animal medical care.

Role Responsibilities

  • Record clinical observations and data in compliance with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP)
  • Assist attending/staff veterinarian(s) with veterinary examinations
  • Conduct treatments of animals under veterinary care, including calculation of drug doses and administration of drugs via all routes
  • Collect samples (blood, urine, feces, and other samples as needed), and perform basic analyses or arrange for external testing according to veterinarian's direction
  • Perform initial triage of veterinary patients when an attending/staff veterinarian(s) is not available
  • Perform anesthesia, including but not limited to assessing anesthetic depth, intubation/extubation, use of anesthesia machines. Use patient warming and monitoring systems.
  • Perform sterile and non-sterile scrub of procedure/sample collection sites
  • Assist in surgery
  • Perform euthanasia
  • Other duties as assigned

Role Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required.
  • LVT OR AS/BS in veterinary technology OR 1 year experience in veterinary or laboratory animal science required.
  • ALAT/LAT/LATG certification preferred.
  • Experience with electronic medical records systems preferred.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office core applications and the ability to learn and use additional applications.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to handle common laboratory species
  • Basic understanding of laboratory operations and data collection preferred.

Special Requirements

  • This role works predominately in a laboratory setting. There will be exposure to animal pathogens and chemicals. There will be handling of, and/or exposure to, animal tissues and zoonotic organisms.
  • Ability to don and wear personal protective gear, including N95 masks and respirators.
  • Physical activity includes lifting (up to 50lbs), carrying (up to 40lbs for up to 50 feet), pushing/pulling (up to 75lbs force), reaching, gripping/pinching, standing, and ascending ladders without restriction.
  • Ability to work beyond typical work schedule including, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts with short notice.
