A Senior Accountant in public accounting analyzes financial records, prepares and reviews tax returns, and creates financial statements for clients, often overseeing junior staff and assisting with audits. Key duties include managing accounts payable/receivable, performing reconciliations, and ensuring compliance with accounting standards and regulations. The role requires a Bachelor's degree, strong analytical and leadership skills, and often a CPA designation.

Key responsibilities

  • Financial statement and tax preparation: Prepare and review financial statements, tax returns (corporate, personal, trust), and other regulatory filings for clients.
  • Client support: Act as a primary point of contact for clients, providing support with accounting and bookkeeping needs.
  • Account analysis and management: Analyze financial data, oversee accounts payable and receivable, perform reconciliations, and manage the general ledger.
  • Audit and compliance: Assist with client audits and ensure all financial records and reporting comply with standards like GAAP and relevant regulations.
  • Forecasting and reporting: Prepare financial reports, forecasts, and projections to help clients understand their financial health and make strategic decisions.
  • Mentorship: Supervise and mentor junior accounting staff, serving as a liaison between them and management.

Qualifications and skills

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field. A Master's degree Preferred.
  • Certification: CPA (Certified Public Accountant) designation is preferred.
  • Experience: Typically requires three to five years of experience.
