Job Summary

A Radiologic Technologist produces images that other medical professionals can use to diagnose injuries and diseases and then develop treatment plans to address health issues. When they do their jobs well, Radiologic Technologist contribute to the overall quality of care provided by a health care facility, reducing the risk of medical errors. By properly operating, maintaining and cleaning equipment, they play an important role in infection control and patient safety. Because they work directly with people undergoing medical testing, they also influence overall patient satisfaction. Job duties and responsibilities include the following,

Qualifications:

• Associate degree in radiologic technology or radiology
• Certificate from the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT)

Responsibilities:

1. Strong oral communication skills to provide clear instructions to patients during testing
2. Critical thinking skills to interpret orders
3. Problem-solving skills to troubleshoot problems with equipment
4. Attentive to detail to set equipment properly and maintain accurate records
5. Observational skills to spot problems with images and ensure that patients remain correctly positioned
6. Computer skills to use picture archiving and communications systems and medical records software
7. Working knowledge of X-ray safety precautions and infection control best practices
8. Understanding of radiologic science, anatomy and complex medical terminology related to X-rays
9. Interpreting the order for the test to determine what body parts need imaging
10. Explaining the test to patients and positioning them to make the test possible
11. Setting the controls on X-ray equipment in preparation for imaging
12. Checking X-ray images and retaking them as needed to ensure clarity
13. Cleaning and performing routine maintenance tasks to keep X-ray equipment operating smoothly
14. Sending X-ray images to other medical providers for reading
15. Inventorying and radiologic supplies
16. Updating patient records with pertinent information

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to fulfill any office activities normally expected in an office setting, to include, but not limited to: remaining seated for periods of time to perform computer-based work, participating in filing activity, lifting and carrying office supplies (paper reams, mail, etc.)
• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to feel, and reach with hand and arms
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 20-30 pounds
• Fine hand manipulation (keyboarding)
