JOB DESCRIPTION

TITLE: Assistant Director of Nursing

REPORTS TO: Director of Nursing Services

I. SUMMARY OF POSITION:

Assists the Director of Nursing Services in the planning, organization, control, utilization and evaluation of all the nursing services provided in the facility. Carries out this assistance so that nursing services are managed within budget and in compliance with federal, state and local regulations and Corporate Policies and Procedures. Assists in initiating and monitoring Corporate Nursing Programs so that residents receive appropriate services designed to meet their specific needs. Assists in keeping records and compiling reports as directed. Based upon facility size and structure, [the ADON may complete the MDS] and/or assists in training nursing services personnel.

II. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

The responsibilities of this position enumerated below, involve significant physical activities including standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds unassisted), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling and twisting. The tasks on this job description marked with an asterisk (*) are those that regularly require these physical activities.

1. Safety

*a. Know and implement safety rules to assure resident and staff safety.

*b. Demonstrate proper use of equipment. Report equipment needs or repairs.

c. Ensure adherence to smoking policies.

d. Report and document any incidents or accidents involving residents, staff or visitors to the supervisor.

*e Perform duties as assigned in Facility Disaster Plan; may include

transportation of residents.

f. Use required protective equipment.

2. Abides by established facility and departmental policies including maintaining confidentiality as appropriate.

3. Maintains a friendly, respectful, helpful attitude toward residents, facilities, staff, corporate staff, volunteers and visitors.

4. Responsible for, presents and attends, facility inservice training and department meetings as well as corporate inservice and training meetings.

5. Coordinates residents assessments and care plans, utilizing the automated MDS/Care Plan System. Responsible for the timely transmission of these assessments within state and federal guidelines.

6. Personnel

a. Participate in planning and budgeting for the Nursing Services Department as directed.

b. Assist in the recruitment, interviewing and hiring of quality staff.

c. Assist in making out time schedules and assuring sufficient staff to meet state requirements as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.

*d. As requested, conduct inservices for nursing personnel. Complete inservice training reports and conduct the initial training program for licensed nurses.

e. Maintain positive employee relations.

f. Assist in ensuring that fair and consistent discipline per Corporate guidelines is administered equally throughout the nursing department.

g. Assist in ensuring performance appraisals are conducted on a timely basis for all nursing department employees.

h. Assist in keeping employee records up to date.

i. Conduct meetings with nursing personnel as requested by the Director of Nursing Services.

j. Ensure all levels of nursing personnel are assigned duties consistent with their education, experience and training.

k. Participate in Continuous Quality improvement teams as requested.

l. Help supervise private duty personnel or other sitters. Orient them to the facility.

6. Resident Care

*a. Assist in the direction, control and planning of the daily activities of the nursing department in compliance with federal requirements, state regulations and Corporate Nursing Programs per company guidelines as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.

*b Initiate, teach and monitor Nursing Programs per company guidelines as directed by the Director of Nursing Services.

c. When requested, attend admission committee meetings to help determine if the facility can meet each prospective resident’s physical and psychological needs within the appropriate financial guidelines. Participate in taking inquiries and determining level of care needs.

d. Assist as directed in ensuring Medicare and Medicaid opportunities are maximized through proper care and documentation and that ancillary charges are captured and appropriately charged.

e. As directed, submit appropriate forms for medicare/medicaid or other third party payment billings.

f. Enforce appropriate standard precautions throughout the facility.

*g. Make rounds daily to ensure that each resident receives timely, appropriate

nursing care and to evaluate the performance of nursing personnel, as requested.

h. Observe the practices of hospitality and dignity with respect to all residents, families, visitors and other personnel. Maintain confidentiality of resident information.

i. Assist in ensuring physician visits and charting meet state, federal and corporate requirements.

*j. When requested by the Director of Nursing Services, meet with the Dining Services Manager or dietician to review diet and nourishment orders and to review residents who may be at nutritional or hydration risk.

k. Assist to ensure that physicians and families are notified of changes in residents’ condition.

l. As directed, audit charts for quantity and quality of charting. Follow-up on incident reports.

m. Assist in coordination of nursing services with all other departments and services, as directed.

7. Facility/Corporation

a. Assist in maintaining the operation of the Nursing Services Department within budget.

b. As directed, ensure corporate approved forms are being used.

*c. Respond quickly to all emergency situations and ensure all nursing services employees are also able to respond to emergencies according to corporate guidelines and facility policies and procedures. When necessary, help with the evacuation of residents to areas of safety.

d. Submit prompt and accurate reports required by Corporate Policies and Procedures and/or outside agencies.

e. Assess supply and equipment needs for the nursing department and ensure needed items are properly purchased and available.

*f. Ensure nursing department supplies are stored in a neat and orderly manner consistent with the inventory system.

g. Demonstrate sound judgement and initiative in decision making.

h. Attend committee meetings as assigned by the Director of Nursing Services.

8. Miscellaneous Duties

a. Promote public relations and maintain liaison with regulatory agencies, physicians, families, community, etc.

b. Assist in the review of resident care policies and procedures, job descriptions and nursing manuals. Revise as directed.

c. Meet continuing education requirements where necessary for state licensure.

*d. Perform related work as required or assigned by the Administrator to fulfill the philosophy, goals and objectives of the facility and as required by Corporate Policy.

e. Assume responsibilities of the nursing department in the absence of the Director of Nursing Services.

III QUALIFICATIONS

1. Currently licensed in the state as a registered nurse.

2. Supervisory experience.

3. Ability to read, write and understand English and have effective written

communication skills.

4. Ability to teach and/or make oral presentations to individuals and groups.

5. Ability to acquire knowledge of, comprehend and work under federal, state and local regulation and facility policies, procedures and programs.

6. Ability to perform effectively under stress.

7. Ability to relate positively, effectively and appropriately with residents, families, referral sources, community members and all levels of personnel.

8. Ability to direct, delegate and follow-up on programs and care of the residents.

9. Meet all health requirement imposed by law.

IV. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

1. Work requires frequent walking through the facility to

and from other departments.

2. Reaching for and handling charts, reports and supplies.

3. Speaking and hearing when receiving instructions and conversing with others.

4. Reading and accurately recording information.

5. Lifting objects up to 50 pounds on an occasional basis.

IV WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Is subject to hostile and emotionally upset residents, family members, personnel, visitors, etc.

2. Is willing to work beyond normal working hours and on weekends and holidays when necessary.

3. May be exposed to the effects of odors, dust, disinfectants and other air contaminates.

4. May be exposed to infectious waste, diseases, conditions, etc., including TB and the AIDS and Hepatitis B viruses.

5. May be subject to the handling of and exposure to hazardous chemicals.

6. Works in office areas, as well as throughout the nursing service area (i.e. drug rooms, nurses’ station, resident rooms, etc.)
