Job Description

Stair Unit Lead

You know the feel of a stringer locking in place, the weight of steel rising into form, and the satisfaction of a stair that stands square and true. Every run, every rise — exact. At TATE FAB, stairs aren’t just built, they’re crafted. If you know how to lift steel into something greater, we’re ready for you.

Position Overview

We are seeking a Master Craftsman – Stair Unit Lead to join our fabrication team. This role is ideal for an experienced fabricator who takes pride in precision craftsmanship and has expertise in structural steel stringers, steel pan construction, grating systems, and ornamental/monumental stair fabrication.

As a Stair Unit Lead, you’ll oversee stair fabrication projects in our shop, mentor junior team members, and ensure high-quality, AWS-compliant work that meets project deadlines. You’ll work with both traditional fabrication techniques and advanced CNC technology — including PythonX Robotic Plasma, Bend-Tech Dragon A400, and Peddinghaus systems — to deliver accurate, high-quality results.

Compensation: $24 – $28/hr base, with the opportunity to exceed $30+/hr with overtime.

Responsibilities

· Lead fabrication of structural and ornamental steel stair systems.

  • Read and interpret blueprints, weld symbols, and layout drawings.

· Uphold quality, safety, and efficiency on all stair projects.

  • Perform welding primarily using FCAW/Flux Core.

  • Skill to execute welds in all positions (flat, horizontal, vertical, overhead) with shop welds most performed in flat position.

· Train and supervise stair fabrication team members.

  • Use measuring tools, squares, and levels to assure accuracy of fit-up.

  • Perform welds to AWS standards for quality and compliance.

  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED (technical training preferred).

  • AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Certification (or ability to certify).

  • Minimum 3 years of fabrication experience with steel stairs.

  • Proficiency with stringers, steel pan stairs, grating, and ornamental stair projects.

  • Strong welding background (FCAW, GMAW, SMAW).

  • Leadership ability and a commitment to mentoring others.

  • Proficient in blueprint reading, layout, and measuring.

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license with a positive driving record.

  • Ability to meet minimum credit rating standards.

  • Pre-employment and ongoing drug screening required; TATE FAB is a drug-free workplace.

  • OSHA-10 Construction Safety Certification, or willingness to complete prior to hire.

  • Strong commitment to safety, efficiency, and teamwork.

Benefits & Growth at TATE FAB

We don’t just hire welders; we invest in craftsmen.

  • Professional Development: Corporate membership to the American Welding Society (AWS) — access to resources, standards, and growth opportunities.

  • Health & Wellness: Comprehensive health insurance plus 5 days of personal wellness PTO accruing in your first year.

  • Vacation: 1 week of paid vacation after your first year, with up to 3 weeks available with seniority.

  • Holidays: 7 paid holidays annually.

  • Advancement: Opportunities for continued training, certifications, and leadership growth.

Who We Are

TATE FAB has been building with steel for over 50 years. From a garage start in Tennessee to projects across the U.S. — Disney, NASA, The Smithsonian, Opryland Hotel, NOAA, and more — our team continues to forge ahead. Many of our crew have celebrated 10, 20, even 40 years with us, and our founder is still part of the daily operation.

“When the hood drops, the real work begins. Will you build the future with us?”
