Our organization in Houston, Texas, is on the lookout for a committed, empathetic, and highly proficient Staff Physician to become part of our esteemed Spinal Cord Injury & Disorders (SCI/D) Service. The SCI/D Center here is among the largest and most comprehensive facilities in the nation, offering acute rehabilitation, medical and surgical management for chronic spinal cord injuries, primary care for Veterans with such injuries, and ongoing interdisciplinary follow-up care.

The perfect candidate will possess robust clinical abilities in handling complex cases of spinal cord injury, excel in a collaborative environment, and demonstrate a strong dedication to providing high-quality, Veteran-focused care.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver thorough outpatient and/or inpatient care to Veterans suffering from spinal cord injuries and disorders, encompassing both traumatic and non-traumatic causes.
  • Offer primary care services to Veterans participating in the SCI/D Primary Care Model.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team, which includes rehabilitation therapists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, urology specialists, PM&R, neurology, surgery, and other relevant fields.
  • Participate in the PM&R/SCI on-call rotation.
  • Contribute to the educational mission of the medical center by supervising residents, fellows, and medical students as needed.
  • Engage in quality improvement projects, performance metrics, and evidence-based practices in accordance with VA standards.
  • Take part in multidisciplinary team rounds, family discussions, and care coordination efforts.
  • Explore opportunities for involvement in clinical research, program development, and national SCI/D initiatives.

Essential Qualifications:

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited institution.
  • Board certified or board eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R), Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, or another relevant specialty.
  • Eligible for a full and unrestricted medical license in the United States.
  • Qualified for appointment within the Veterans Health Administration.
  • Strong clinical background in managing spinal cord injuries or a willingness to gain expertise through VA-supported training.

Preferred Qualifications (not mandatory):

  • Fellowship training or substantial experience in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine.
  • Board certification/eligibility in Spinal Cord Injury Medicine (SCIM).
  • Experience in interdisciplinary teams within inpatient rehabilitation or SCI centers.
  • Previous experience with the VA.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, typically scheduled Monday through Friday, with participation in a call rotation.
