Job Description
Under general supervision, the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer, performs diagnostic imaging and therapeutic procedures in one or more specialties of Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) on all age groups for outpatient, inpatient and emergency/trauma patients.
- Performs diagnostic imaging procedures in one (1) or more specialties including but not limited to obstetrical, gynecological, abdominal, vascular work, small parts, musculoskeletal, neuro-sonography and neonatal
- Performs portable scans and assists in procedures
- Operates a variety of diagnostic ultrasound equipment and monitors and maintains medical equipment
- Assesses general patient condition
- Documents procedures and events in the patient’s medical record and departmental logs, in accordance with regulatory, hospital and departmental standards
- Recognizes and documents pathology; reviews pertinent history in patient’s chart
- Transports patients using gurneys, wheelchairs and beds
- Schedules procedures and patients; answers departmental telephones; may be assigned to coordinate patient flow
- Trains medical and technical personnel such as radiology residents and students in ultrasound
- Participates in departmental Quality Improvement efforts
The Diagnostic Medical Sonographer performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Level I:
- License and Certification:
- Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in one (1) specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Must obtain a valid certification and registration with the ARDMS in a second specialty used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health within six (6) months of appointment.
- Possession of valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

- Experience:
- One (1) year of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
- License and Certification:
- Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in two (2) specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Possession of valid Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

- Three (3) years of experience working as a Diagnostic Medical Sonographer
- License and Certification:
- Valid certification and registration with the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) in three (3) or more specialties used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health; AND
- Possession of valid Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.
- Experience:
Substitution

Possession of a valid certificate in Nuchal Translucency Ultrasound or another certificate used at the San Francisco Department of Public Health may substitute for certification and registration in one (1) specialty by the ARDMS
Applicants must meet the minimum qualification requirement by the final filing date unless otherwise noted.
One-year fulltime employment is equivalent to 2,000 hours (2,000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week). Any overtime hours that you work above 40 hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine fulltime employment.

Selection Procedures:

Training and Experience Evaluation: (Weight: 100%):
Candidates that meet the minimum qualifications will participate in a Training and Experience Evaluation that is designed to measure the knowledge, skills, and abilities in job related areas that have been identified as critical for satisfactory performance in this position.
Candidates will be required to respond to the training and experience evaluation in the time frame indicated and must submit the completed questionnaire as directed to have it evaluated. Responses cannot be changed once submitted. Candidates will be evaluated based on their responses. Candidates must achieve a passing score on the training and experience evaluation to continue in the selection process and will be placed on the confidential eligible list in rank order according to their final score.
Additional selection processes may be conducted by the hiring department prior to making final hiring decisions.
Certification
The certification rule for the eligible list resulting from this examination will be the Rule of Ten Scores.

The duration of the eligible list resulting from this examination process will be 6 months and may be extended with the approval of the Human Resources Director.
