The City of O'Fallon is seeking an experienced, forward‑thinking Assistant Parks Director to provide strategic leadership, operational oversight, and long‑term planning for one of the region's most respected parks systems. This position plays a key role in shaping safe, high‑quality, and accessible parks, facilities, and public spaces for our community. The Assistant Director also serves as acting Director of Parks when assigned. The starting salary for this position is $92,435.20-$115,544.00 DOQ.

About the Role

The Assistant Director of Parks & Landscape leads a diverse team responsible for maintaining and enhancing O'Fallon's parks, landscapes, athletic fields, splash pads, and public green spaces. This role combines high‑level planning with hands‑on operational management, ensuring that daily maintenance, capital projects, and long‑term initiatives align with city goals and community expectations.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading, supervising, and developing division personnel, including superintendents and field staff.

  • Overseeing field operations to ensure efficient, effective maintenance and project execution.

  • Developing and implementing division policies, procedures, and long‑range plans.

  • Managing purchasing, budgeting, bid specifications, and financial reporting.

  • Coordinating capital improvement programs with internal departments and external agencies.

  • Serving as project manager for select parks and landscape projects.

  • Ensuring compliance with ADA requirements, building codes, safety standards, and city policies.

  • Responding to emergencies, natural disasters, and after‑hours operational needs.

  • Representing the department at City Council and Parks & Recreation Advisory Board meetings.

  • Investigating and resolving citizen concerns with professionalism and care.

Minimum qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.

  • Seven or more years of progressively responsible experience in parks, landscape, or public works operations.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.

  • Knowledge of parks maintenance, construction principles, ADA compliance, budgeting, and public administration.

  • Ability to obtain a Class A CDL and Certified Public Applicator Certificate.

  • Preferred certifications: Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) and Certified Park and Recreation Professional (CPRP).
