Job Summary: Provides care in the Ambulatory setting directed toward meeting both the psychosocial and physical needs of the patient. Is a resource person and teacher to both patient and other team members. Care given reflects initiative and responsibility indicative of professional expectations. Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain steady level of productivity. Is a self-starter. Is compatible and supportive, a team player. Communication on behalf of the patient reflects the mission, ethics and goals of the hospital as well as the focus statement of the department. Maintains regulatory agency requirements, nursing and hospital policies, procedures and standards.


Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinates and supervises patient care.
  • Gives care to the patient reflecting flexibility in rules and regulations as indicated by individual patient needs.
  • Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgement.
  • Performs reflecting knowledge in all areas of care specific to the Outpatient Surgery Department.
  • Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
  • Organizes and manages nursing activities reflecting due consideration for patients’ needs and the needs of unit and staff. Flexibility is maintained.
  • Utilizes initiative, strives to maintain steady level of productivity; self-starter, compatible and supportive; a team player.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of medications and IV fluids and their correct administration based on age of the patient and patient’s clinical condition.
  • Demonstrates ability to perform a head-to-toe preoperative assessment on all patients and reassesses as needed postoperatively. This includes pediatric, geriatric and the general patient population.
  • Demonstrates ability to formulate an individualized plan of care as indicated and evaluates for effectiveness.
  • Formulates a teaching plan based on identified patient learning needs and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching as appropriate, from preop to discharge.
  • Provides patient with explanation and verbal reassurance consistently.
  • Identifies physical symptoms and changes and takes appropriate action in a timely manner.
  • Provide patient education by making preop and postop calls.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisor, co-workers and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as needed and as appropriate to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
  • Completes patient charges in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians in the outpatient surgery setting and other departments.
  • Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Practices good guest relations.
  • Maintains a good working relationship and effective communication both within the department and with other departments for the benefit of the patient.
  • Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within shift.
  • Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
  • Carries out medical and surgical asepsis during treatments and special procedures.
  • Maintains an environment that provides the patient and family with feelings of safety and security.

Requirements:

Professional Requirements:

  • Adheres to dress code; appearance is neat and clean.
  • Completes annual educational requirements.
  • Maintains regulatory requirements; nursing and facility policy, procedures and standards including all state federal and CMS regulations.
  • Reports to work on time and as scheduled; completes work within designated time.
  • Wears identification while on duty, uses computerized time system correctly.
  • Completes in-services and returns in a timely fashion. Keeps up-to-date with equipment orientation/training.
  • Maintains and ensures confidentiality of patient’s records.
  • Actively participates in Department’s Quality Improvement (QI) activities.
  • Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
  • Attends committee, CQI and management meetings, as appropriate.
  • Ensures compliance with policies and procedures regarding department operations, fire, safety and infection control.
  • Complies with all organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
  • Communicates the mission, vision and core values of the hospital.
  • Attends and participates in all staff meetings.
  • Communicates the mission, ethics and goals of the facility as well as the focus statement of the Department.
  • Maintains and ensures patient confidentiality at all times.

Regulatory Requirements:

  • Current Registered Nurse Licensure in the State of Kansas.
  • Current BLS Certification.
