POSITION TITLE
Assistant Professor of Dance, McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, Coker University.
POSITION SUMMARY
Coker University, McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts, invites applicants to apply for the position of Assistant Professor of Dance beginning August 2026. This is a 9-month, tenure-track appointment teaching 12 credit hours a semester with a competitive salary and benefits, reporting to the Director of the McCall School of Visual and Performing Arts.
This position requires an individual with a broad understanding of the dance field with an African diasporic approach. Problem solving, adaptability, collaboration, and communication are essential for this position. We seek a candidate who values student-centered learning and is comfortable working with students from a variety of backgrounds. This is an excellent opportunity for a passionate and experienced individual dedicated to teaching dance, fostering creativity, and pursuing excellence in academic and creative spaces. PRINCIPAL DUTIES
- Teach all levels of modern/contemporary dance, preferably from an African diasporic perspective;
- Teach jazz dance, world/cultural forms, hip hop dance, tap dance, musical theatre dance, or other forms that contribute to the mission of the program;
- Teach dance composition, dance improvisation, music for dancers, and seminars, depending upon the background of the candidate;
- Apply inclusive pedagogy in the classroom;
- Choreograph for dance concerts and/or other McCall School performances;
- Produce dance concerts, organize guest artists, and oversee dance residencies;
- Mentor student choreography and creative research;
- Advise students in academic and career preparation;
- Recruit students by attending conferences, college fairs, regional schools, and other events;
- Communicate with prospective students and steward admissions;
- Maintain the dance program's regional profile through active scholarship and continued professional development;
- Serve on University committees and contribute to McCall School administrative work, as assigned;
- Serve as a creative thought partner to the McCall School director, faculty and staff;
- Offer academic and creative ideas that support student success; and
- Commit to and contribute actively to Coker's mission.
ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION
- Master of Fine Arts or PhD in Dance or an advanced degree in a related field with applicable professional dance experience
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1-3 years college teaching experience
- Professional choreographic and/or performance experience
- Experience working with students from various backgrounds and dance experiences
PREFERRED
- Ability to teach jazz, hip hop, tap, and/or musical theatre
