Job Overview

The Controller serves as the central communication hub for all accounting operations, ensuring the accuracy of financial reporting and maintaining robust internal controls. This role involves managing the accounting team, finalizing financial statements, ensuring regulatory compliance, and communicating effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, executives, auditors, regulators, and vendors. The Controller will play a key role in building efficiencies, implementing cost-saving strategies, and contributing to VeldCo’s growth. This is a primarily office-based position with flexibility for remote work when needed. Additional duties may be assigned as required or desired by the employee.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Oversee Accounting Operations & Financial Reporting
    • Manage all accounting operations and ensure accurate, timely financial reporting.
    • Review and finalize monthly financial statements for all company entities.
    • Ensure compliance with accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
    • Stay informed on material transactions across all entities and ensure proper accounting treatment.
    • Identify transactions with potential tax implications.
  2. Financial Analysis & Planning
    • Assist in creating budgets, financial forecasts, and tax planning scenarios.
    • Support the development of underwriting models for financial institutions.
    • Oversee and review cost segregation studies.
  3. Stakeholder Communication
    • Act as a key communicator, bridging financial data with employees, executives, auditors, regulators, and vendors.
    • Coordinate with financial institutions, strategic partners, and other departments on accounting-related matters.
    • Draft internal memos to document and support financial strategies and decisions.
  4. Compliance & Documentation
    • Coordinate and accumulate information for tax planning, compliance, and audits.
    • Assist with document preparation, review, and interpretation, including legal documents, leases, real estate purchase agreements, partnership agreements, contracts, and loan documents.
  5. Process Improvement & Research
    • Develop and refine accounting processes, procedures, and internal controls.
    • Build efficiencies and provide recommendations for cost-saving strategies.
    • Conduct research projects, including but not limited to federal partnership taxation.
    • Stay updated on federal and state accounting and tax law changes through ongoing education.
  6. Team Support & Miscellaneous
    • Assist in managing office workflow and serve as a resource for staff with questions or issues.
    • Take on miscellaneous projects as requested to support organizational goals.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 7+ years experience in accounting, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Strong understanding of tax planning, compliance, and federal/state accounting regulations.
  • Excellent communication skills to engage with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage and lead an accounting team while fostering collaboration.
  • Proficiency in financial analysis, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Experience with document review (e.g., leases, contracts, loan agreements, partnership agreements) is a plus.
  • Proactive mindset with a focus on process improvement and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Adaptability to handle additional duties as assigned.
