Job Overview
AIMS Locum Tenens is seeking a qualified Technician Gastroenterology to provide clinical, procedural, and administrative support within the Gastroenterology Clinic at Mike OCallaghan Military Medical Center (MOMMC), Nellis AFB. The Technician will assist physicians and nursing staff with GI procedures, patient preparation, procedure room setup, equipment handling, specimen management, patient transport, recovery support, high-level disinfection of endoscopes, electronic health record support, scheduling, referrals, and clinic readiness while maintaining DHA/MTF standards for safety, infection control, and quality care.

General Duties:

  • Provide gastroenterology clinic and procedural support in accordance with MTF policies, procedures, and clinical standards.
  • Assist physicians and RNs during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency GI procedures.
  • Ensure procedure rooms, equipment, instruments, and supplies are prepared, available, safe, and properly maintained.
  • Support patient care activities including check-in, transport, vital signs, recovery support, and documentation.
  • Maintain infection control standards, safe work practices, proper equipment cleaning, and high-level disinfection processes.
  • Participate in required training, orientation, competency verification, process improvement, customer service, quality projects, and medical readiness activities.

Specific Duties:

  • Set up, support, and take down equipment for GI procedures including EGD, colonoscopy, ERCP, esophageal pH testing, pill camera endoscopy, paracentesis, manometry, liver biopsy, and PEG placement.
  • Provide equipment setup and support for emergent procedures as required within the MTF, including the OR, ER, and ICU.
  • Assist physicians and RNs during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency GI procedures.
  • Clean procedure areas and clinic rooms after GI procedures and properly dispose of contaminated supplies, equipment, and biohazardous waste.
  • Perform high-level disinfection of endoscopes, including washing, assembling, sterilizing, testing disinfectant efficacy, documenting results, and using endoscopic reprocessors according to manufacturer IFUs and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Transport scopes from procedure rooms to the disinfection area in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Handle, identify, label, and deliver specimens to pathology.
  • Screen and check in patients; escort and transport patients safely using wheelchairs, gurneys, or other approved methods.
  • Obtain, monitor, and record physiological measurements in the electronic medical record as required.
  • Prepare procedure rooms and pre-operative bays, excluding medications.
  • Assist with GI patient recovery and help identify or manage post-procedural complications.
  • Maintain accurate inventory of supplies and communicate supply needs to ensure continuity of patient care.
  • Support administrative duties including answering phone calls, checking voicemails, managing T-Cons/electronic messages, uploading GI reports, mailing letters, scheduling appointments and procedures, and reviewing referrals according to clinic guidelines.
  • Assist with training new staff, GI procedure support, and coordination with General Surgery and OR staff as needed.

Qualifications:
Degree / Education:

  • High school graduate required.
  • Must have graduated from an accredited Medical Assistant program, whether national, state, or military-trained equivalent, and hold a current certificate.

Experience:

  • Minimum one year of experience within the past 36 months in a medical setting.
  • Prior Gastroenterology experience is desired.
  • Must have knowledge of anatomy and physiology, aseptic technique, medical equipment preparation and storage, GI procedures, specimen handling, and infection control.

Certifications:

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) is recommended.
  • Certifications must be through the American Heart Association or American Red Cross; online/computer-based training does not meet certification requirements.

Licensure :

  • No licensure is required.

Skills and Abilities :

  • Knowledge of step-by-step procedures for gastroenterology cases.
  • Ability to prepare, operate, clean, disinfect, and maintain GI instruments, endoscopes, and related equipment.
  • Familiarity with infection control, aseptic technique, specimen care, high-level disinfection, and Joint Commission requirements.
  • Ability to assist during diagnostic, therapeutic, and emergency GI procedures.
  • Ability to obtain and document vital signs and physiological measurements in the EMR.
  • Strong communication skills to interact with patients, physicians, nurses, and clinic staff.
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations and respond to physician and nursing staff needs.
  • Dexterity in the use of instruments and ability to support patient transport, recovery, and procedural workflows.
  • Ability to support scheduling, referrals, electronic messaging, report uploads, phone calls, voicemails, and other clinic administrative functions.

Schedule:

  • Monday through Friday.
  • Not to exceed 40 hours per week.
  • Duty hours scheduled between 0600 and 1800.
  • Includes a minimum 30-minute uncompensated lunch break.
  • On-call coverage is required for urgent or emergent GI procedures outside normal duty hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays; rotation will be no more frequent than 1:3, with response to the MTF within 30 minutes when called in.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for prolonged periods.
  • Ability to assist with transporting patients and equipment.
  • Ability to safely move patients using wheelchairs, gurneys, or other approved transport methods.
  • Manual dexterity required for handling GI instruments, equipment, specimens, and procedure room setup.
  • Emotional ability to perform calmly during emergencies and meet procedural demands.

Work Environment :
Military outpatient Gastroenterology clinic/procedural setting at MOMMC, involving direct patient support, GI/endoscopy procedure assistance, patient recovery support, equipment processing, high-level disinfection, electronic documentation, infection control, scheduling, referrals, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Immunization / Security Requirements:
Must meet all DHA/MEHP health requirements, including required screenings, TB screening, immunizations, and annual flu vaccination. Must also complete background investigation, qualification package, and base access requirements for Nellis AFB/MOMMC.
