The University of Minnesota's Department of Public Safety (DPS) is committed to partnering with our campus community to ensure our students, faculty, staff and visitors are safe. The Department of Public Safety has three departments dedicated to campus safety. The Public Safety Emergency Communications Center (PSECC) is a 911 dispatch and monitoring center. University Security is a uniformed security department that focuses on safety escorts and providing security services. The University of Minnesota Police Department is a state licensed police department.


Are you looking for an opportunity to work with a diverse community while gaining law enforcement experience? The University of Minnesota’s Twin Cities campus hires community service officers (CSOs) to support police officers. As a CSO, you will provide uniformed, unarmed public safety services and advise members of the University community regarding safe behaviors, ordinances, rules, and policies to promote a safe and inclusive campus.


This is a position designed to provide a career path into the law enforcement agency. This position is a two-year temporary post, with an option of becoming a permanent position.

Responsibilities:

  • Patrolling Grounds: Monitoring campus buildings, parking lots, and walkways on foot, bicycle, or in a marked vehicle to deter and report suspicious activity.
  • Facility Management: Locking and unlocking campus buildings, classrooms, and laboratories on set schedules.
  • Hazard Reporting: Identifying and reporting maintenance issues, fire hazards, or malfunctioning safety equipment


Requirements:

  • Enrolled in an Associated or Bachelors program and at least one year of work experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal five years
  • Able to pass a background check
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Must meet and maintain requirements for access to law enforcement sensitive information including CJIS Data Access Terminals
