Assistant Controller Essex County, NJ
We are seeking a hands-on Assistant Controller to support the Controller in overseeing the company's accounting operations, financial reporting, inventory accounting, and cost accounting functions. The ideal candidate will have strong experience within a Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) or manufacturing environment, with expertise in GAAP, inventory accounting, cost of goods sold (COGS), and SAP. This individual will play a key role in ensuring financial accuracy, strengthening internal controls, and supporting strategic business decisions.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in managing the day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close processes.
- Prepare accurate and timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
- Oversee inventory accounting, reconciliations, and valuation while ensuring accurate inventory reporting.
- Analyze and monitor Cost of Goods Sold (COGS), manufacturing variances, and inventory reserves.
- Partner with operations and supply chain teams to improve inventory controls, costing accuracy, and financial performance.
- Prepare account reconciliations and ensure the integrity of balance sheet accounts.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis initiatives.
- Assist with internal and external audits and coordinate the preparation of audit schedules.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and internal controls.
- Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy within the accounting function.
- Support special projects and provide financial analysis for senior leadership.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including experience in a CPG, manufacturing, or distribution environment.
- Strong knowledge of U.S. GAAP, financial reporting, inventory accounting, and cost accounting.
- Experience analyzing COGS, manufacturing costs, inventory transactions, and standard costing.
- Advanced experience using SAP ERP.
- Strong proficiency with Microsoft Excel.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across finance, operations, and executive leadership.
