Job Description
Company - Bogush Mechanical DBA Public Sewer Service Division
Public Sewer Service is a private underground sewer & water utilities contractor that has been in business for over 50 years and is part of a multi-division organization generating over $100 million in annual revenue.
From our multi-acre facility, we operate a large fleet of:
- Commercial jetters and Jet/Vac trucks (including Vactors)
- Video inspection equipment for sewer and drain lines
- Excavation equipment for underground sewer and water main repairs/installs
- Grease trap cleaning and maintenance equipment
We serve commercial and industrial customers, school districts, and public agencies throughout New Jersey. Each division has its own manpower and equipment, and our teams work together closely to serve customers safely, efficiently, and profitably.
Position Overview - Leadership Role (Operations Manager)
Due to continued growth in our commercial sewer cleaning and underground sewer & water utility repair work, Public Sewer Service is seeking a hands-on Operations Manager to oversee day-to-day field operations.
This role is responsible for:
- Leading and coordinating field servicemen/crews
- Planning and managing the daily use of jetters, Jet/Vac trucks (Vactors), and excavation equipment
- Ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to a high standard
You will work closely with our service managers, dispatch, and office staff to run a busy, multi-crew operation that handles:
- Commercial sewer and drain cleaning
- Jet/Vac operations
- Video inspection (CCTV)
- Underground sewer and water main repairs and installations
This is a roll-up-your-sleeves operations role, not a back-office position. We are looking for someone who understands how a contractor makes money in the field and can lead people, trucks, and jobs accordingly.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily operations for commercial sewer cleaning and underground sewer & water utility repairs.
- Lead and manage field servicemen/crews, including jet/vac operators, laborers, and excavation crews.
- Plan and approve daily and weekly schedules for crews, Jet/Vac trucks, jetters, CCTV vans, and excavation equipment.
- Work with dispatch and service managers to assign crews, trucks, and equipment to the right jobs, adjusting as needed for emergencies and changes.
- Ensure field personnel follow company procedures and safety standards (PPE, confined space, shoring, trench safety, traffic control, etc.).
- Coordinate underground sewer and water main repairs and tie-ins, including excavation, backfill, and restoration in conjunction with project and service managers.
- Monitor job progress, productivity, and equipment utilization; help resolve field issues as they arise.
- Oversee equipment readiness in coordination with maintenance (Jet/Vac trucks, jetters, excavation equipment, support vehicles).
- Maintain strong working relationships with customers, GCs, school districts, and inspectors as needed for field operations.
- Support accurate job documentation from the field (work orders, timesheets, photos, video files, and notes) so billing and reporting are clean.
- Provide regular feedback to ownership and facility leadership on staffing needs, equipment needs, scheduling constraints, and opportunities to improve efficiency.
Qualifications
- 5–10+ years of experience in field operations leadership for a contractor in one or more of the following areas:
- Sewer & water main contractor / underground utilities
- Commercial sewer & drain / jet-vac operations
- Industrial cleaning / vacuum truck / environmental services
- Commercial plumbing/mechanical service with strong sewer/drain component
- Proven experience leading field crews (operators, laborers, techs) and managing multiple jobs and trucks at once.
- Familiarity with commercial trucks and heavy equipment used in this type of operation, including:
- Commercial jetters
- Jet/Vac trucks (Vactors)
- Excavators, backhoes, skid steers, and related underground utility equipment
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety: trenching/shoring, confined space, traffic control, PPE.
- Demonstrated ability to plan and adjust daily/weekly schedules for crews and equipment in a busy service/construction environment.
- Comfortable working with both field and office staff; basic computer skills (email, spreadsheets, job tracking systems).
- Excellent communication and leadership skills; able to hold people accountable while maintaining respect.
- Background in a private, for-profit contractor environment (not municipal/DPW) with an understanding of utilization, productivity, and job cost drivers.
- A hands-on, practical mindset with willingness to be in the field regularly to understand conditions and support crews.
Compensation & Benefits
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
- Benefits package including 401K, health insurance, retirement plan, paid time off, paid holidays etc.
- Stable, long-term role with a 50+ year, family-owned company as part of a multi-division organization generating over $100M in annual revenue.
- Opportunity to lead operations in a large, established commercial sewer & utility division with room for further advancement.
How to Apply
Please submit your resume and a brief summary of your relevant experience, including:
- Types of field operations you have managed (sewer/water, utilities, industrial cleaning, plumbing/mechanical, etc.)
