Pediatric Registered Nurse – Charlestown (Boston), MA

Contract Duration: 13 Weeks (04/26/2026 – 07/25/2026)

Shift: Rotating Days/Nights | 40 Hours Weekly

Schedule: Every Other Weekend Required

Job Summary

A world-renowned leader in restorative care is seeking a skilled Pediatric RN. Unlike an acute care "sick" hospital, Spaulding focuses on children recovering from complex medical conditions, traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, and multi-system organ failure. You will provide high-level inpatient care that bridges the gap between acute hospitalization and a return to home or community life.

Key Responsibilities

  • Rehabilitative Nursing: Manage pediatric patients with high medical complexity, including those with trachs, vents, and feeding tubes.
  • Developmental Advocacy: Incorporate age-appropriate developmental milestones into the rehabilitation plan, ensuring care is child-centered.
  • Patient & Family Education: Train parents and caregivers on complex home care needs, including medication administration, wound care, and equipment troubleshooting.
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work daily with physical therapists (PT), occupational therapists (OT), and speech-language pathologists (SLP) to coordinate the child’s recovery goals.
  • Vigilant Monitoring: Monitor for acute changes in status; while the setting is rehabilitative, patients remain medically fragile and require sharp assessment skills.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum 2 years of inpatient Pediatric hospital experience is strictly required. Experience with medically complex or technology-dependent children is highly preferred.
  • Licensure: Active Massachusetts (MA) RN License.
  • Certifications: AHA PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) and BLS required.
  • Shift Flexibility: Must be able to rotate between day and night shifts (8-hour and 12-hour formats) as needed by the unit.

Unit & Facility Details

  • Location: Charlestown, MA 02138.
  • Environment: A beautiful, state-of-the-art facility located right on the Boston waterfront.
  • Urgency: Critical Order (Level 2).

Shift Details & Rotation

This position is a 40-hour rotating schedule. Be prepared for the following shift patterns:

  • Nights: 19:00 – 07:30 (12s) or 23:00 – 07:30 (8s).
  • Days: 07:00 – 19:30 (12s) or 07:00 – 15:30 (8s).

Clinical Spotlight: The Rehab Specialist

In a pediatric rehab setting, your "win" for the day might not be a discharge; it might be a patient successfully using an assistive communication device or tolerating a new feeding bolus. Because these children have often spent weeks in an ICU, your PALS skills remain vital for safety, but your patience and ability to celebrate incremental progress are what will make you successful at Spaulding.

The Charlestown Navy Yard is one of the most scenic areas of Boston, with easy access to the North End and downtown via the water shuttle.
