Control Systems Specialist (SCADA)
Role Summary:
This is a project-focused engineering role centered on supporting a variety of industrial automation systems, including SCADA, HMI, and DCS platforms. We are seeking a candidate with a strong technical or engineering background who possesses a high aptitude for computers, networking, and databases. While direct platform experience is a plus, the primary requirement is a strong foundational skill set and a desire to be trained to become a subject matter expert on multiple systems. Although we normally look for those with Emerson DeltaV experience here at Proconex, this role is best suited for someone that specializes in SCADA and HMI and it does not require experience with Emerson DeltaV or other DCS.
This individual will be trained to handle the hands-on application-level tasks for system upgrades, modifications, and new projects. This includes developing HMI graphics, configuring reports, and automating maintenance tasks.
Key Responsibilities:
- Learn and master the installation, configuration, and upgrading of various industrial automation and control system software platforms.
- (Under guidance) Execute system modification projects, including database changes, adding new points, and implementing logic.
- Design, develop, and deploy high-performance HMI graphics based on customer specifications and internal standards.
- Configure, test, and deploy historical trends and system reports.
- Develop, test, and maintain modest scripts (e.g., Batch files, Python) for automating routine system maintenance, backups, and file transfers.
- Provide project-based application and OS-level troubleshooting across different systems.
- Develop and thoroughly execute formal test plans to ensure all modifications and new features are working correctly before deployment.
- Interface with internal PLC/RTU programming teams to ensure data and system integration is successful.
- Develop and maintain technical documentation for as-built systems and configurations.
Required Skills & Foundational Aptitude:
- A strong technical background, such as a Bachelor's degree in any engineering discipline (e.g., Chemical, Mechanical, Electrical), Computer Science, or equivalent technical/automation experience, coupled with a clear aptitude for computers and technology.
- A high degree of aptitude and demonstrated desire to learn complex, specialized software systems.
- High attention to detail and a commitment to thorough testing and quality assurance.
- Experience in developing or executing formal test plans and procedures.
- Familiarity with Windows Server OS environments (e.g., managing files/permissions, troubleshooting services).
- Solid understanding of IT/OT network fundamentals (IP communication, firewalls, segmented networks).
- Modest scripting skills (e.g., Python, Batch files) or a clear ability to learn.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills for interfacing with internal teams and customers.
Highly Desired (Big Plus / Nice-to-Have):
- Any prior experience with an industrial SCADA/HMI platform (e.g., OpenEnterprise, Ignition, Wonderware, ClearSCADA, CygNet, etc.).
- Experience with Distributed Control Systems (DCS) platforms.
- Familiarity with industrial communication protocols (e.g., Modbus, OPC).
- Familiarity with PLC or RTU programming concepts.
- Experience with HMI/GUI development.
- Basic understanding of SQL databases (querying, data structures).
- Familiarity with the pipeline industry or other process-control environments.
