Benefits and Wellness

The Benefits and Wellness Manager is responsible for the design, administration, and execution of our organization's benefits, leave of absence programs, wellness initiatives, compensation, and overall total rewards strategy. This position plays a key role in supporting employee well-being and engagement while ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws. The ideal candidate will balance strategic thinking with hands-on execution in a mission-driven, people-focused nonprofit environment.

Responsibilities:

Benefits Administration

  • Design and manage all aspects of employee compensation and benefits programs (medical, dental, vision, life, disability, 403(b), 457(b) commuter, EAP, etc.)
  • Partner with brokers and vendors to optimize plan design, resolve escalated issues, and support annual renewals
  • Lead Open Enrollment planning and execution

Leave of Absence and Accommodation Coordination

  • Oversee administration of FMLA, CFRA, PDL, ADA, reasonable accommodations and personal leaves
  • Support managers and employees in understanding leave rights and responsibilities
  • Lead interactive processes and ensure timely, compliant documentation

Compensation Management

  • Design and manage pay structures and salary benchmarking
  • Conduct job evaluations and market pricing to ensure internal equity and external competitiveness
  • Partner with Finance and Asset Management align compensation budgets with business objectives and goals
  • Lead compensation review cycles, including merit, bonuses, retirement distributions.

Wellness & Employee Support

  • Develop and promote employee wellness initiatives aligned with total rewards strategy
  • Partner with internal stakeholders to drive engagement in health and well-being programs

Total Rewards Strategy

  • Contribute to the development of a comprehensive Total Rewards strategy that supports talent acquisition, retention, and performance
  • Manage, support and communicate annual total rewards statements
  • Analyze market trends and provide recommendations to remain competitive and equitable

Compliance and Reporting

  • Ensure all programs comply with applicable laws and internal policies
  • Prepare reports for audits, renewals, and internal analysis
  • Maintain accurate records and support HRIS data integrity

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in human resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of progressive HR experience, with a focus in compensation and benefits
  • Knowledge of California employment laws and leave policies required
  • Experience in nonprofit, mission-driven environments highly preferred
  • Strong understanding of compliance related to benefits, ACA, HIPAA, ERISA, and FMLA
  • Demonstrated ability to manage vendors and cross-functional relationships
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient in HRIS systems (e.g., ADP Workforce Now), Excel

Pay Range

$115,000 - $158,000 Annual Salary - Pay based on applicable experience and qualifications
