Estimator – Heavy Civil
Austin Underground Inc. is seeking an experienced Estimator responsible for bidding and budgeting for upcoming projects. The Estimator serves as an integral part of the AUI team involved in the day to day activities within the company from helping with construction issues, to planning and scheduling.
Located in Jonestown, on the north shore of Lake Travis, Austin Underground Inc. builds Water, Waste-water, Storm Sewer and Duct bank utilities in existing roadways, and always look for projects that have some degree of difficulty. When other companies back away from a construction project, Austin Underground Inc. will be at the front of the line seeking the business.
We are experts in the area of complicated and difficult construction projects from utility to roadway repairs in municipal and commercial environments.
As an Estimator, you will consult with clients, vendors, and the Austin Underground Inc. team defining scopes of work and recognizing alternative systems or methods while understanding design intent and factoring in escalating costs of construction.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Attend pre-bid, pre-planning and pre-construction meetings and site visits
- Establish cost based on production rates, and material/rental/subcontractor costs
- Analyze and compare material and subcontractor quotes
- Reviews drawings and specifications for projects to determine the entire scope of work required
- Identify areas of concern and budget accordingly
- Performs take-offs of materials, equipment, subcontract work, and labor
- Base estimate on all variables presented in plans (traffic control, deep utilities, special constraints, rock, dewater, etc.)
- Review data to determine material, equipment and labor requirements and prepares itemized lists
- Manage relationships with subcontractors
- Develop and establish standard hour related cost data or effect cost reductions
- Pulls together all information and prepares final estimate for projects to establish budget costs and final bid price
- Create budget
- Monitor project for compliance with bid assumptions
- Monitors ongoing scope of work
- Participate in and/or conduct the regular project status meetings
- Reviews all construction documents for changes from bid documents and prepares request for change variance order
Candidate Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management or Construction Science, preferred
- Heavy civil estimating experience preferred, but open to training the right candidate
- Extensive knowledge of road grading and/or paving industry, construction means and methods, costs and engineering principles
- Knowledge of competition for pricing and bid spreads
- Knowledge of concrete and asphalt estimating a plus
- Strong communication both verbal and written, negotiation skills, interpersonal skills, and presentation skills
- Strong organizational skills, detail oriented, excellent customer service skills, and a can do attitude
- Strong computer skills and knowledge with Microsoft Excel, Word and operations software packages
- High work ethic with ability to meet deadlines in a fast paced environment
- Leads by example and follows Mutual Respect Policy, what Austin Underground Inc. calls our Muy Bien Policy
- Valid driver's license
