Virtual Design and Construction Manager (VDC Manager)

Direct Manager: Operations Manager, Project Executive, Construction or Project Manager, or as assigned

Department: Operations Administrative

The VDC Manager will develop and manage the VDC process companywide; provide leadership for VDC Engineer/Specialist personnel and assist management in VDC development and coordination responsibilities; and serve as liaison between departments and between Business Units.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES AND OBJECTIVES:

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Prepare project-specific BIM execution plans as needed
  • Assist project teams with preconstruction services, establish / implement VDC procedures and techniques to assure timely modeling / shop drawing approval and overall execution of BIM Project Execution Plans
  • Work with local, regional and corporate IT and VDC staff in support, maintenance and development of VDC standards and 3D software tools and related emerging technologies
  • Review contract conditions; ensure compliance with contract terms in relation to VDC • Complete other responsibilities as assigned
  • Support BD department for critical RFQ preparations and presentations
  • Research and advice on current and emerging technologies that could be implemented within the company

STAFFING & TRAINING:

  • Supervise and direct overall activities of department or staff as assigned; plan and review department activities, assign / coordinate staffing requirements, resolve problem areas, train support staff
  • Interview applicants and orient new hires
  • Conduct performance reviews according to Thornton’s career development policies
  • Manage and resolve disputes, performance deficiencies, and matters requiring disciplinary actions
  • Develop training material and conduct VDC training including software and procedures for employees

PROJECT SUPPORT:

  • Estimate and establish VDC modeling budget and schedule for assigned projects
  • Assist project teams in determining required Subcontractor participation and function as the “Model Administrator” for assigned projects
  • Establish / modify project specific VDC Guidelines prior to bid or preconstruction services
  • Assist project teams with review / approval of Subcontractor adherence to VDC Guidelines, including model submittal schedule and updates as well as updating of the model(s) to reflect as‐built conditions for submittal of the record set / project closeout
  • Lead clash detection and RFI resolution with project teams in preconstruction efforts
  • Organize / lead meetings for VDC coordination with VDC Engineers, users and Subcontractors

MINIMUM SKILLS OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Candidate must possess Thornton’s core values: Result Drive, Proactive, Safety Conscious, People Focused, Customer Oriented, and Team Oriented
  • A degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or Architecture, completion of Construction Management Certificate Program, or equivalent
  • Minimum 5‐8 years (including supervisory skills) project experience– Project Engineer, Project Manager or equivalent
  • Demonstrate extensive knowledge of and direct support experience in required software (AutoCAD, Navisworks, Revit, Archicad, etc.)
  • Support & manage BIM and VDC production operations and interoffice collaboration on these platforms together with IT staff, office staff and project staff
  • Leadership ability
  • Demonstrate problem‐solving ability and strong sense of urgency
  • Demonstrate organizational and communication skills
  • Thorough understanding of all project management control systems (scheduling, cost control, procurement and estimating)
