The American Flood Coalition (AFC) is a nonpartisan group that drives transformational adaptation to higher seas, stronger storms, and more frequent flooding. AFC comprises more than 450 elected officials, local leaders, military groups, and businesses that work together to advance resilient and equitable flood solutions at the local, state, and federal levels. As the only organization that focuses on flooding and sea level rise across all levels of government, AFC is uniquely positioned to transform how communities around the country adapt to flooding and sea level rise.

Position summary

We are seeking a dynamic and nimble Communications Associate to join our growing organization. This role will be responsible for helping drive project execution by drafting compelling stories to advance organizational priorities; identifying and executing on proactive thought leadership efforts; and coordinating internal, cross-team functions. This position is an excellent opportunity for a well-founded candidate with expertise in multi-channel communications, media relations, and creative content production. Our ideal candidate has previous public relations or communications agency experience and can execute on projects and tasks with multiple stakeholders, develop relationships to align on communications efforts, and display strong organizational and communications skills. The Communications Associate will join a team of passionate and talented people, including a project management and strategy-focused Communications Associate Director and a graphic design-focused Communications Associate. This is a full-time position reporting to our Communications Director and will be located in our headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Communications Associate Director and Director in managing projects and executing on external and internal communications and strategies.
  • Support proactive thought leadership for communications, including identifying opportunities, drafting opinion pieces, crafting social media content, and preparing senior staff for media interviews and speaking engagements, to grow awareness and strengthen AFC's brand.
  • Craft compelling narratives for key stakeholders, including members, partners, and donors, in coordination with the donor team.
  • Drive internal project execution and support the development of the organizational content stream.

Qualifications

  • At least three years of experience in public relations, communications, or journalism.
  • Experience coordinating multiple priorities and projects to create narrative products.
  • Strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and skilled at developing systems and protocols.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills for a variety of audiences.
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment, tact, confidentiality, and diplomacy in all interactions.
  • Familiarity with managing an organization's social media accounts.
  • Bachelor's degree required.

  • Salary range: $66,000–$78,000
