Mechanical Design Engineer -- Nuclear Primary Pressure Boundary
Job Description
Job Description Mechanical Design Engineer — Nuclear Primary Pressure Boundary
Picture your week in a hybrid rhythm at our Cranberry Township, PA campus, applying advanced mechanics to keep nuclear power safe and reliable. Reporting to the Manager, RVI Load Development & Analysis • Reactor Component Engineering, you will help qualify and enhance components that live at the heart of Westinghouse-designed plants, including the AP1000 fleet. Note: No relocation assistance is provided.
What your days look like
Morning stand-up, then straight into analysis: you build and refine models, run finite element simulations (for example, Ansys), and validate results with classical hand calculations. You translate insights into design improvements, tracking to project schedules alongside project managers and subsystem leads. Afternoons bring cross-discipline integration with system and manufacturing counterparts to resolve emergent issues. When outage season arrives, you shift gears to support refueling outages remotely or on-site, including stretches of 12-hour and occasional overnight work when the schedule demands.
What you'll tackle
- Engineer solutions for repair, modification, and qualification of components within the primary pressure boundary for Westinghouse nuclear plants, including current operating units and AP1000 reactors.
- Use FEA (e.g., Ansys), closed-form engineering calculations, and Westinghouse internal analysis codes to demonstrate compliance and performance.
- Integrate component and subsystem designs in partnership with component, system, and manufacturing leads; resolve emergent design challenges quickly.
- Collaborate with project managers and technical leads to define plans and maintain realistic project schedules.
- Identify technical risks early and drive them to resolution with clear, thoughtful engineering judgment—especially when problems are not fully defined.
- Apply industry and regulatory requirements, including NRC/DOE/ASME codes, standards, and criteria relevant to nuclear reactors.
- Provide guidance and technical direction while partnering with national laboratories, sub-contractors, suppliers, fabricators, and customers.
- Support plant refueling outages on-site or remotely; accommodate time-sensitive 12-hour shifts and overnight coverage as needed.
What you bring
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering required; Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, or Aerospace Engineering preferred.
- 3+ years of experience in component structural analysis or thermo-hydraulics.
- Proficiency with Finite Element Analysis (FEA).
- Professional Engineer (PE) License experience/exposure is a plus.
