Inpatient Medical Coder

Position Overview

The Inpatient Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing and coding medical records for inpatient hospital encounters. This role ensures compliance with ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding standards and supports accurate reimbursement, revenue integrity, and regulatory compliance.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and code documentation for hospital admissions, procedures, surgeries, and other inpatient services.
  • Assign accurate ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS codes based on physician and hospital documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and third-party payer regulations, including CMS and DRG coding rules.
  • Collaborate with providers and clinical staff to resolve documentation gaps or discrepancies.
  • Maintain high accuracy and meet productivity and quality metrics for inpatient coding.
  • Participate in ongoing training and remain current with coding updates, new regulations, and DRG assignments.
  • Support internal audits and provide documentation as required by compliance teams.
  • Adhere to patient confidentiality and HIPAA regulations at all times.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of 35 years of experience in inpatient medical coding.
  • Proficient in ICD-10-CM, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Knowledge of DRG and inpatient billing processes.
  • Experience with EHR systems in a hospital setting.
  • Strong understanding of compliance, reimbursement, and regulatory guidelines.

Required Skills

  • High accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and critical thinking skills for complex coding scenarios.
  • Effective communication for collaboration with providers and internal teams.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and meet deadlines.

Certifications

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) preferred; CPC or other recognized coding certifications acceptable.
  • Continuing education to maintain certification.

Clearance Requirement

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain any required background checks or access authorizations if applicable.
