Major Functions:
The WIC Nutritionist is a health team member and assists health professionals (including the WIC Clerk/Aide and Lactation Staff) in providing direct patient health care services. This work includes nutrition assessment, education, and counseling to clients in a health care setting or a community outreach service delivery program. The work is performed under the supervision of the WIC Program Coordinator.
Essential Functions:
Examples of work performed in this classification include, but are not limited to, the following:
► Performs individual and family counseling and group teaching in regular and therapeutic nutrition (pediatric and maternal nutrition - not to exceed their scope based on their credentials).
► Promotes interest in nutrition and health to the community.
► Assists in developing and evaluating specific nutrition goals and objectives as part of the nutrition education plan.
► Participates in and assists in planning formal and informal staff training at the county and project levels.
► Prepares reports, plans, and records as directed.
► Develops client-centered plan of care based on assessment and client need.
► Relates the concepts and theories of nutrition, sciences, and dietetics to growth, development, health, and/or disease.
► Refers clients/patients' families, as appropriate, to other nutrition, health, or social services agencies and maintains communication to ensure coordination and consistency of services.
► Performs related or similar duties as required or assigned.
Relationships:
Directly responsible to the GAC WIC Program Coordinator with frequent or continuous contact with the WIC Clinical Staff and clinical personnel.
Education:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Community or Institutional Nutrition, Food and Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Service Management, or Home Economics Education.
AND
Certification/Licensure Requirements:
Possession of a valid license as a Dietitian or Nutritionist from the Mississippi State Board of Health.
Documentation Required:
Applicant must attach a valid copy of their license issued by the Mississippi State Board of Health.
Physical Demands:
These physical requirements are not exhaustive, and additional job-related physical requirements may be added to these by individual agencies as needed. Corrective devices may be used to meet physical requirements. These are typical requirements; however, reasonable accommodations may be possible.
Light Work: May frequently walk or stand and/or often exert force equivalent to lifting to approximately 10 pounds and/or occasionally exert force equivalent to lifting to approximately 20 pounds.
Vision: Requires the ability to perceive the nature of objects by the eye. Near Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 inches or less. Midrange: Clarity of vision at distances of more than 20 inches and less than 20 feet. Far Acuity: Clarity of vision at 20 feet or more. Peripheral: Ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point.
Depth Perception: Three-dimensional vision. Ability to judge distances and spatial relationships
to see objects where and as they are. Ability to adjust focus: Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
Speaking/Hearing: Possesses the ability to give and receive information through speaking and listening skills.
