MGMA is looking for an Associate Director of Government Affairs to join our Washington D.C./hybrid team.


The Associate Director, Government Affairs is responsible for lobbying both United States Congress and the Administration on behalf of Association interests and works with stakeholders, including specialty societies to further Association advocacy goals. This position also oversees a number of federal health policy issues specific to the business, operational, and overall healthcare policy interests of medical group practices in the United States.


Essential Functions:

  • Advocates on behalf of the Medical Group Management Association (MGMA) interests with Congress and the federal administration.
  • Proactively identifies federal policy issues impacting MGMA members in the areas such as the Medicare physician fee schedule.
  • Build relationships and work with external stakeholders such as medical specialty societies to further Association advocacy goals. Analyzes regulations and legislation pertaining to medical group practices to identify areas of concern to members and drafts comment letters to CMS, HHS, and other relevant agencies.
  • Creates educational tools, articles, and letters to inform MGMA members and Congress of the impacts of federal regulations and legislation on medical practices.
  • Presents on advocacy/policy issues at MGMA national and state conferences as well as internal constituencies (Government Affairs Committee).
  • Represents the Government Affairs department with external stakeholders, and on internal MGMA workgroups and cross-departmental collaborative initiatives.
  • Other duties as required and necessary to ensure the success of the organization.

Requirements:

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of physician healthcare policy issues and physician practice operations.
  • Deep understanding of political process, including legislative and regulatory processes.
  • Strong speaking, writing, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and respond to unpredictable daily requests.
  • Ability to work independently or collaboratively and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Excellent analytical skills, ability to understand complex regulations and legislation.
  • Ability to respond calmly to stressful and sensitive situations.
  • Strong understanding of federal legislative and regulatory healthcare issues and how they may affect our members and the Association’s positioning.
  • Ability to consistently promote, support, work, and act in a manner in support of MGMA’s mission, vision, and values.

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s degree in political science or related field is required.
  • A Master’s degree preferred.
  • Juris Doctorate degree preferred.

Experience:

  • Five (5) or more years of experience in government, advocacy, and/or health policy is required.

An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.


Additional Requirements/Licenses/Certifications:

  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

This is a largely sedentary role, so employee must be able to remain in a sedentary position while focusing for extended periods of time throughout the workday. Position also requires occasional movement inside the office to access file cabinets, printers, etc.


While performing the duties of this job, employee is regularly required to successfully navigate scenarios requiring the following operational abilities:

  • Ability to operate PC/keyboard and other office productivity equipment
  • Ability to position self to traverse/navigate around typical office setting
  • Ability pull/push, lift, open/close, grasp/manipulate, transport up to 10 lbs.
