Job Summary

The Access Primary Care Medical Assistant is essential in assisting providers in the examination and treatment of patients, following established standards and practices. The Medical Assistant will play a critical role in ensuring a welcoming, clean, and safe clinical environment. Professionalism, effective communication skills, a strong understanding of clinical practices, and the ability to multi-task in a primary care setting are critical for delivering seamless, high-quality, patient-centered care.

This position is currently full-time, with an expected schedule of approximately 33hours per week.

Primary Job Duties

  • Greet patients, escort them to exam rooms, and ensure patient flow runs smoothly and efficiently.
  • Obtain patient history, assess/triage patient, measure vital signs, and record information in the medical record/EMR.
  • Explain treatment procedures and prepare patient and exam room for examination.
  • Carry out Standing Orders as applicable, prior to the patient being seen by the provider, according to written protocol.
  • Clean and sterilize instruments, exam rooms, and equipment after use.
  • Administer injections, medications, eye and ear irrigations, dress/bandage wounds and incisions, draw blood, remove sutures/staples, change dressings, and assist provider with procedures.
  • Perform diagnostic tests including eye exams, electrocardiographs, pulse oximetry, etc.
  • Perform CLIA-waived lab tests; collect, label, and process specimens for reference labs per provider orders.
  • Perform dosage calculations for administering medications.
  • Complete medical records to include medical services rendered, test results, and supplies used.
  • Perform patient call backs, arrange referrals and testing, and schedule follow-up appointments.
  • Ensure all patient-related telephone calls are documented in the EMR.
  • Process prior authorizations for medications, imaging, and procedures as required by payors.
  • Restock exam rooms and maintain adequate clinical supplies.
  • Monitor disposable inventory, supplies, and pharmaceuticals weekly; notify provider if ordering is needed.
  • Monitor medication expiration dates.
  • Demonstrate ongoing competency and proficiency in clinical job requirements.
  • Assist with registration and perform clerical duties as necessary.
  • Assist with the orientation of new personnel.
  • Attend at least 75% of staff meetings as scheduled.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the provider.

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Certified Medical Assistant (preferred).
  • One year experience in Primary Care preferred.

Licenses/Certifications

  • Certified Medical Assistant (preferred).
  • BLS certification required.

Knowledge

  • Basic computer systems and applications including Word, Excel, and email.
  • Medical terminology and basic office procedures.
