General Purpose
A Police Officer is responsible for responding to calls for service and assistance requests. Response may be on foot or by driving from place to place in a squad car. A Police Officer proactively and reactively enforces Federal, State of Colorado, and Town of Granby (local) laws by making physical arrests and issuing summons to violators. A Police Officer is required to prepare reports on actions taken and testify in a court of law when required.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Actively support the vision, mission, policies, procedures, programs, goals, objectives and philosophies of the Town of Granby and the Police Department.
- Support and follow lawful orders given by the Sergeant of Police and the Chief of Police.
- Familiarity with all aspects of assigned duties and proven excellence in performing all duties.
- Perform work as a member of a team; assist other members of the department as needed to accomplishment necessary work.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings and briefings with other personnel as needed and appropriate.
- Promptly respond to all calls for service and take appropriate police action.
- Proactively enforce all laws and ordinances, using sound judgment and discretion, when violations are observed or otherwise become known.
- Write and/or dictate reports on all reportable incidents, complete required forms, and appropriately route all forms and paperwork as required.
- Resolve interpersonal conflict, mediate interpersonal disputes, and refer citizens as appropriate for assistance.
- Perform regular equipment inspections to ensure operational readiness and report deficiencies to a supervisor.
- Assist citizens as appropriate to ensure safety of the public and to maintain the peace.
- Make arrests of violators and cause them to be brought before the court.
- Make frequent checks of private and public property to ensure security of property and safety of citizens.
- Make frequent contacts with business owners and citizens to communicate and receive information as well as foster good community relations.
- Respond to mutual aide calls.
- Notify the Chief of Police and/or Sergeant of Police of major events within the Town or adjacent jurisdictions and of injuries to employees of the department whether on or off duty.
- Support and comply with the provisions of the Constitution of the United States, the Constitution of the state of Colorado, Colorado State Statutes and the Granby Municipal Code.
Employees are held accountable for all duties of this job and will obey and comply with all lawful orders and directives, whether written or oral, of any Supervisory or Command Officer.

Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:
- Know, understand and comply with the provisions of the Granby Police Departments Policy and Procedure Manual, Granby Municipal Code, Colorado Statutes, and Town of Granby Policies and Procedures.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of contemporary police procedure.
- Knowledge of the resources necessary and available for the provision of police services.
- Knowledge of the proper use of police records and their application to investigative procedure.
- Knowledge of the general function and jurisdiction of county, state, and federal enforcement, regulatory and licensing agencies.
- General knowledge of the principles of psychology and human behavior.
- Ability to prepare accurate, comprehensive and timely reports on police actions taken.
- Ability to maintain composure and take responsible action during stressful situations.
- Ability to speak effectively in public or other group settings.
- Possess effective communication skills for articulating ideas, directions and concepts, both technical and abstract.
- Ability to work cooperatively with others and provide situational leadership.
- Ability to use discretion, tact, and sensitivity when dealing with members of the public as well as co-workers.
Education or Formal Training and/or Experience:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice or other appropriate field of study or, any equivalent combination of education, experience, or training that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
- Possession of or the ability to obtain, a valid Colorado drivers license and Certification by Colorado P.O.S.T. (Police Officer Standardized Training).
Working Environment and Physical Activities:
The work environment and physical demands described herein are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
- While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to speak to others, and hear what others say.
- The employee is required to walk, run, climb, bend, stoop, reach, squat, stretch and twist. Furthermore, the employee is required to carry, handle, feel, manipulate and carry objects, tools, and instruments which weigh up to 50 pounds.
- The employee must frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 100 pounds. People or objects weighing more than 100 pounds may need to be moved or dragged on occasion.
- The employee must have normal binocular vision, correctable to 20/20. Employee must have normal distance vision, close vision, peripheral vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus within normal ranges.
- The employee must possess the ability to speak the English language clearly and understandably in order to facilitate effective and efficient communication under normal and stressful conditions. Other language abilities are a plus.
- The employee must possess normal tolerance levels for extreme variations in climate and temperature conditions commonly associated with high alpine locations.
- The employee must be able to tolerate long periods of time driving a vehicle, sitting in an office setting, standing or walking.
- The employee is required to take physical control and custody of combative persons, therefore, a certain amount of physical contact and confrontation is a normal function of the job, which may expose the employee to potential physical injury.
- Due to the physical nature of the job, the employee is expected to possess and maintain a high degree of physical fitness and the ability to perform all aspects of the job in a safe manner.
- The employee must be able to work Saturdays, Sundays, Holidays and unusual hours.
- Strength and Stamina: Standing, walking, Sitting, Lifting, Carrying, Pushing, Pulling from Medium Work Range through Very Heavy Work Range.
- Medium Work Range: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally or up to 20 pounds frequently or up to 10 pounds constantly.
- Heavy Work Range: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally or up to 50 pounds frequently or up to 20 pounds constantly.
- Very Heavy Work Range: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, or in excess of 50 pounds frequently, or in excess of 20 pounds constantly.
- Climbing: Using feet, legs, hands to go up or down ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles, etc.
- Balancing: Able to prevent stumbling or falling when walking, standing, climbing, crouching, especially when conditions exceed the requirements of normal movement and could jeopardize the safety of the individual or others.
