Position Details
This Sign Language Interpreter role involves providing specialized munication services to deaf and hard of hearing students with various linguistic and educational needs through our established interpreting framework. You'll work with approximately 40-50 students ranging from elementary through high school levels, dedicating 35-37.5 hours weekly to direct interpreting, preparation, and collaborative activities.
The position emphasizes clear, accurate interpretation across academic subjects, effective collaboration with educational teams, and prehensive support for student munication access. You'll utilize best practices in educational interpreting while maintaining professional standards and advocating for optimal learning conditions for deaf and hard of hearing students.
Key Responsibilities
Your primary duties include providing simultaneous and consecutive interpreting services during classroom instruction, facilitating munication between deaf and hard of hearing students and hearing peers, and supporting student participation in all educational activities including assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular programs. You'll collaborate with teachers and support staff to prepare subject-specific vocabulary, ensure appropriate visual access conditions, and advocate for student munication needs.
Additional responsibilities enpass interpreting during parent-teacher conferences and IEP meetings, maintaining detailed logs of interpreting services provided, participating in professional development activities to enhance skills, and working with deaf and hard of hearing education specialists to support prehensive student services. You'll also coordinate with other interpreters when team interpreting is required and provide feedback to educational teams regarding student munication access and participation.
Professional Requirements
Applicants must possess a minimum 3.5 EIPA score and have pleted 2 years of interpreting experience in educational settings. Fluency in American Sign Language and English is mandatory, with demonstrated petency in educational interpreting techniques, classroom dynamics understanding, and professional interpreter ethics.
Critical qualifications include knowledge of deaf culture and educational approaches for deaf and hard of hearing students, ability to interpret across various academic subjects and grade levels, understanding of special education processes and terminology, and strong interpersonal skills for working with diverse educational teams. Flexibility in scheduling and fort with both in-person and virtual interpreting environments are essential for this position.
Preferred Credentials
We highly value candidates with 4.0 EIPA scores, Written EIPA certification, and RID/NIC certification with written test pletion. Additional preferences include experience with various sign language systems, familiarity with assistive technology used by deaf and hard of hearing students, and background in inclusive education practices.
