We are seeking a licensed and experienced Hand Therapist to join our team in Oakland, CA. In this full-time role, you will be responsible for evaluating patients, developing individualized treatment plans, and delivering expert hand therapy services to support optimal recovery and function. This position requires strong clinical judgment, the ability to lead and supervise support staff, and a commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based care.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate patients and create customized treatment plans following AOTA standards.
- Provide specialized hand therapy to patients with upper extremity conditions or post-surgical needs.
- Set and update treatment goals in collaboration with referring physicians.
- Supervise and delegate responsibilities to therapy assistants and aides in accordance with state regulations.
- Fabricate custom splints and orthotics for various diagnoses.
- Document evaluations, progress, and treatment outcomes in a timely and professional manner.
- Participate in staff development, student training programs, and continuing education activities.
- Educate patients and families on home programs, recovery expectations, and long-term management.
- Support clinical quality initiatives, equipment maintenance, and occasional travel if needed.
- Adhere to clinical best practices, safety standards, and professional ethical guidelines.
Requirements
Education & Licensure:
- Graduate of an accredited Occupational Therapy program (ACOTE or equivalent).
- Licensed Occupational Therapist in the state of California.
- Documented training and competency in advanced practices such as Hand Therapy and Physical Agent Modalities.
Clinical Knowledge:
- In-depth understanding of upper extremity anatomy, pathology, and rehabilitation.
- Familiarity with tissue healing, immobilization/mobilization principles, and post-operative care.
- Knowledge of modality applications and safety protocols (e.g., thermal, electrical stimulation).
- Ability to design and fabricate splints/casts based on clinical need.
Skills & Abilities:
- Strong leadership and team collaboration skills.
- Proficient in task analysis and ergonomic/job modification strategies.
- Excellent organizational, documentation, and time management abilities.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills for patient care and interdisciplinary coordination.
- Competent in using clinical software and electronic medical records (EMR).
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and support patient mobility throughout the workday.
- Frequent walking, bending, standing, and manual dexterity for hands-on therapy and equipment use.
