Job DescriptionDescription:

The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can only legally be performed by a registered pharmacist.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy of Hillsboro Health to continually improve our performance to those we serve.
  • Procures and distributes drug orders by provider request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols, and within specified timeframe.
  • Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specific timeframe.
  • Maintain patient profiles accurately by promptly entering new orders and changes from providers.
  • Contributes to the effective operation of the department.
  • Manages Pyxis MedStation.
  • Participate in the quality improvement activities of the department.
  • Participates in improvement activities that affect the pharmacy inventory and cost.
  • Maintains competency required for current job title/position.
  • Prepares intravenous sterile preparations and chemotherapy once appropriately trained.
  • Perform patient interviews face-to-face or by phone, as needed, to obtain an accurate medication history to aid in the Admission Medication Reconciliation Process.
  • Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.
  • Effectively communicates with providers, nurses, pharmacists, hospital personnel, and patients.
  • Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
  • Ability to set priorities and solve problems.
  • Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
  • Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • High School graduate or equivalent.
  • Hospital and IV compounding experience preferred.


CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Valid technician licensure through the State of Illinois.
  • Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Board


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard).
  • May require medium lifting and carrying light loads (not more than 25 lbs.) and stooping or kneeling.
  • Walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is sometimes necessary.
  • Must be able to physically operate the equipment used in the job.
