The pharmacy technician assists the pharmacist in preparing and distributing drugs, maintaining the drug inventory and maintenance of records. Pharmacy technicians work only under the supervision of a registered pharmacist. They do not perform duties that can only legally be performed by a registered pharmacist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Demonstrates a commitment to the philosophy of Hillsboro Health to continually improve our performance to those we serve.
- Procures and distributes drug orders by provider request, pharmacist request or prearranged work assignment according to established policies, procedures and protocols, and within specified timeframe.
- Maintains adequate stock of medications and supplies according to established policies, procedures and protocols and within specific timeframe.
- Maintain patient profiles accurately by promptly entering new orders and changes from providers.
- Contributes to the effective operation of the department.
- Manages Pyxis MedStation.
- Participate in the quality improvement activities of the department.
- Participates in improvement activities that affect the pharmacy inventory and cost.
- Maintains competency required for current job title/position.
- Prepares intravenous sterile preparations and chemotherapy once appropriately trained.
- Perform patient interviews face-to-face or by phone, as needed, to obtain an accurate medication history to aid in the Admission Medication Reconciliation Process.
- Ability to perform work accurately with attention to detail within specified times.
- Ability to work cooperatively with hospital and pharmacy staff.
- Effectively communicates with providers, nurses, pharmacists, hospital personnel, and patients.
- Ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule.
- Ability to set priorities and solve problems.
- Fosters a team environment by providing orientation and training to new team members.
- Ability to meet the pharmaceutical care needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult, geriatric, rehabilitation and skilled-nursing patients.
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Requirements:
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Hospital and IV compounding experience preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
- Valid technician licensure through the State of Illinois.
- Certification from the Pharmacy Technician Board
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- Repetitive use of hands and fingers (e.g., preparing IV admixtures, use of a computer keyboard).
- May require medium lifting and carrying light loads (not more than 25 lbs.) and stooping or kneeling.
- Walking or standing for long periods of time (4-8 hours) is sometimes necessary.
- Must be able to physically operate the equipment used in the job.
