Shifts Available: 7:00am-7:30pm OR 7:00pm-7:30am (12.5-hour shifts)
Job OverviewMadison Approach Staffing is recruiting for a Patient Care Technician to support our client's Emergency Department. This role is responsible for the delivery of patient care under the guidance of Emergency Department Registered Nurses and in conjunction with Licensed Practitioners to maintain flow and provide quality patient care. The ideal candidate will work collaboratively with the healthcare team to provide patient transport, maintain clean and ready patient care areas, perform phlebotomy and EKGs, obtain vital signs, and ensure proper stocking of supplies and equipment. This fast-paced Emergency Department environment requires the ability to handle high-volume, high-stress situations including critical events and emergent interventions. This is a temporary assignment with immediate start through April.Key Responsibilities
- Provide patient care delivery under the direct guidance of Emergency Department Registered Nurses and Licensed Practitioners to maintain efficient patient flow and quality care
- Transport patients safely within the Emergency Department and to other hospital departments as needed
- Re-stock patient care areas, treatment rooms, and supply rooms to ensure adequate inventory levels
- Clean and prepare patient care areas between patients to maintain safe, sanitary environment
- Demonstrate competency in phlebotomy techniques including obtaining blood specimens and other lab samples; deliver specimens to laboratory in timely manner
- Perform electrocardiograms (EKGs) on patients of all ages and ensure proper lead placement and quality tracings
- Obtain and record vital signs including blood pressure, pulse, respirations, temperature, and oxygen saturation
- Perform wound care, splinting, and other various clinical duties as directed by nursing staff
- Demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in use of department equipment including cardiac monitors, infusion pumps, pulse oximeters, end-tidal CO2 monitors, defibrillators, suction equipment, Doppler devices, EKG machines, Pyxis medication system, bar-coding systems, oxygen delivery systems (wall and portable), adult code cart, Braslow pediatric cart and bags, and various procedure trays
- Demonstrate knowledge of Emergency Department layout, room locations, and supplies/equipment locations for efficient patient care and re-stocking
- Utilize specialty areas appropriately including negative pressure isolation rooms
- Order supplies and maintain inventory management for assigned areas
- Demonstrate knowledge of resource locations including documents, manuals, and online resources such as Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Understand EMTALA (Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act) requirements and implications
- Demonstrate knowledge of principles of growth and development across the lifespan; assess patient status and identify age-specific care requirements
- Interact professionally with all members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team including physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists, radiology staff, and ancillary services
- Exercise universal precautions and use personal protective equipment when handling blood and potentially infectious materials
- Respond appropriately to emergency situations and critical events in the Emergency Department setting
Required Skills & Experience
- Education: High school diploma or GED required
- Certification: BLS (Basic Life Support) through American Heart Association required upon hire or must be completed within 3 months of employment
- Clinical Skills: Competency in basic patient care techniques, vital sign assessment, and patient safety protocols
- Technical Skills: Computer proficiency for documentation, order entry, and accessing patient information systems
- Communication: Professional phone etiquette and effective verbal communication with patients, families, and healthcare team members
- Organization: Strong organizational skills with ability to prioritize tasks in fast-paced, high-volume environment
- Stress Management: Ability to work effectively in high-stress situations involving illness, injury, critical events, and unexpected patient outcomes
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work 12.5-hour shifts with frequent standing, walking, lifting, and patient transport activities
- Flexibility: Willingness to work day shift (7:00am-7:30pm) or night shift (7:00pm-7:30am) as assigned
- Safety Compliance: Understanding and adherence to infection control policies, universal precautions, and safe handling of blood and infectious materials
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification
- Phlebotomy experience, particularly in Emergency Department or acute care setting
- Previous experience working in Emergency Department or urgent care environment
- Experience with pediatric and geriatric patient populations
- Familiarity with electronic health record systems
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Experience with cardiac monitoring and interpretation of basic rhythms
- Spanish language proficiency or other language skills
- Experience with trauma patients and emergency interventions
Work Schedule & Details
- 12.5-hour shifts: 7:00am-7:30pm (day shift) OR 7:00pm-7:30am (night shift)
- Shift assignment determined based on department needs and candidate availability
- On-site position in Emergency Department, Valhalla, NY
- Temporary assignment: Immediate start through April 2026
