Job Description

5 Axis CNC Setup Machinist

Job Description

This position is for an experienced 5 Axis CNC Mill Setup Machinist in a precision CNC machine shop that produces close-tolerance components from aircraft-grade alloys for the aerospace and defense industry. You will set up, adjust, and operate multi-axis CNC mills, work closely with CNC programmers and production leadership, and ensure that all parts meet stringent quality and engineering standards. The role offers a 4x10 schedule with potential overtime and the opportunity to work with advanced equipment and controls in a smaller, highly specialized environment.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret mechanical part blueprints, GD&T drawings, and work instructions to plan and execute CNC mill setups.
  • Consult with the CNC programming team to determine machining strategies and part processing plans.
  • Set up and adjust 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC mills, including vertical, horizontal, and 5-axis machines.
  • Modify tool and work offsets and make minor program edits, including G-code modifications, using FANUC and Siemens controls.
  • Set up machines, load materials and parts, run production, change cutting tools, and make necessary offsets and adjustments to maintain quality and productivity.
  • For second shift, both set up and operate 5-axis mills while providing supervision and guidance to the night crew as needed.
  • Perform in-process checks during machining to verify dimensions and surface finishes meet specifications.
  • Work closely and communicate effectively with the Production Manager to achieve product quality and production goals.
  • Communicate with customers regarding quality issues and respond to customer corrective action requests when required.
  • Participate in customer source inspections of parts as directed by management or quality leadership.
  • Perform daily mechanical inspection of machined parts using surface plate techniques and CMM tools, including in-process, first article, and final inspection.
  • Inspect parts using precision hand tools such as micrometers, indicators, height gages, thread gages, plug gages, and optical comparators.
  • Operate a CMM to inspect parts; use PCDMIS or similar CMM software where applicable.
  • Read and interpret GD&T per ANSI Y14.5 engineering standards to verify conformance of parts to drawings.
  • Review material and processing certifications to confirm compliance with aerospace standards and customer specifications.
  • Inspect raw metal materials for size, condition, and conformance to specifications before machining.
  • Maintain accurate inspection logs, scan and file documentation electronically, and manage quality records via email and online systems.
  • Support the Operations Manager and Quality Manager or Supervisor with inspection, documentation, and other quality-related tasks as required.
  • Assist the management team by completing any additional duties assigned to support production and quality objectives.

Essential Skills

  • Proven experience setting up and operating 3-, 4-, and 5-axis CNC mills in a production environment.
  • Strong ability to read and interpret mechanical blueprints and engineering drawings with GD&T.
  • Hands-on experience with 5-axis machining, including setup and operation of complex parts.
  • Proficiency with FANUC and Siemens CNC controls, including making offsets and basic G-code edits.
  • Demonstrated experience machining aircraft-grade alloys and heat-treated materials for aerospace, military, or defense applications.
  • Familiarity with GD&T and the ability to interpret ANSI Y14.5 standards.
  • Experience performing precision mechanical inspection using micrometers, indicators, height gages, optical comparators, thread and plug gages, and surface plate techniques.
  • Ability to operate a CMM for part inspection; familiarity with PCDMIS or similar CMM software is strongly preferred.
  • Experience reviewing material and processing certifications for compliance with aerospace standards and customer requirements.
  • Strong communication skills to collaborate with production management, quality personnel, and customers on technical and quality issues.
  • Ability to work from and follow detailed work instructions, inspection plans, and machining processes.
  • Comfort working in a CNC machine shop environment with close-tolerance, high-precision parts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Mori DMG or similar 5-axis machining centers.
  • Experience in aerospace, military, or defense manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in both setup and operation roles, including the ability to support and supervise a second-shift crew.
  • Prior involvement in customer source inspections and responding to corrective action requests.
  • Experience with CNC programming concepts or basic program adjustments beyond simple offset changes.
  • Ability to manage inspection documentation, including logging results, scanning paperwork, and maintaining electronic files.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality, close-tolerance parts.
  • Ability to multitask and support operations and quality leadership with various technical and inspection duties.
